Has anyone been offered an interview for the Film program class of 2024?
By looking over the previous film interview threads I can’t figure out if interviews are good or bad. Do they call in borderline applicants or only ones they think they want?
And if anyone has any stats (total app to program, yield, acceptances, etc) I’d love a link!
I haven’t been offered one, but I’ve read that TFT usually interviews potential students by mid-february. By all accounts, it’s a good sign, but it’s just another phase in the process and it does not guarantee admission. That being said, I’ve never heard of anyone (at least on these forums) that has been accepted without an interview. It is possible, but I’ve never seen anyone claim so online.
@diamondlife I am an international applicant so I don’t qualify for those scholarships. And even if I did I don’t think my application is strong enough to make it through hahaha
That’s an interesting theory, I thought all potential admits were interviewed.
@ashymustard just holding on to whatever hope I can.
I was under the same impression but have heard nothing about interviews this year and I see nothing on the TFT admission page about interviews for Film and Television, only Theater. So hopefully it’s not a thing anymore.
My daughter applied to TFT. She got an Alumni scholarship email, no Regents. Hasn’t heard anything about interviews. I haven’t seen anyone post about having gotten a request for one this year yet. Would think if they were doing them someone would have posted about it somewhere by now?
@CAtransplant maybe interviews will take place later than other years…? Who knows. I’ve learned it’s a bad idea to assume anything. TFT is a selective program and most people applying will not get in. Worrying about interviews makes no difference at this point, so I’m just trying not to stress about it. I’m just curious to see what type of people get in, so maybe that’s why I still lurk around these forums.
My son applied to TFT for film…received the Alumni Scholarship email, but no word about an interview. So, like all of you, just trying to hold tight over here and keep in mind all the other great places in the country to learn, grow, and study film!
I was correct! Interviews are NOT a thing anymore!
Just called the department and per TFT admissions you DO NOT need an interview to be admitted. Most will be admitted WITHOUT one! The ONLY reason you will be called for an interview is IF they need more information. They are ongoing through out the admissions cycle but so far NO APPLICANTS have been called in.
If you don’t get called in it’s either a solid yes or solid no. If you do get called it’s your time to shine and let them know why they should admit you. So everyone applying, including myself, can rest easy and wait until decision day.
Omg that makes me feel so much better. I was under the impression that only interviewed students get admitted and not getting an invite even though it is half way through February was freaking me out.
I feel like film production applicants are at a disadvantage for regional or merit scholarships because our portfolios, scores, and activities are drastically different to those of STEM majors. I hope it is compensated by the film school's own scholarships because it is so rare for film students to be offered the larger merit scholarships. I too was not offered the regents, but was stupid enough to write the essay for it because I didn't realize it was for invite only.
Hahaha @CindyLeuWho theres no way I’d be offered regents!
But I was offered alumni and I KNOW it’s because of my extra curricula’s, not academics. I have a lot of community service and film experience so here’s hoping!
Diamondlife, thanks so much for putting us all at ease re: no interviews so far this year–and none necessary. Really appreciate your taking the time to share!
Hi! In regards to interviews, I was just notified that I got a request to interview. Also, there’s about 13 slots filled up over 2 days right now, so I’m guessing at least 13 other people were asked to interview as well!
@marietagbo I was told this morning that interviews are for applicants that they need more information from. Obviously whomever I spoke with didn’t know there were some going out already. Good luck!
Last year over TFT received over 3k applicants and accepted 106 so it seems like for them it’s easier to call people in and talk to them face to face rather than make them write more like the rest of the school.
@diamondlife that is not true. I am a film major at TFT and EVERYONE in my cohort had to interview in order to get into UCLA. They may have exceptions to the rule for some of the people, but getting an interview is a great indicator that you will be admitted into the program. I know the person who conducts the interviews for the school and the interviews for admission are going on today. Nothing has changed.
I can confirm this. When I had my interview, the admissions officers (who were amazing and honestly the nicest people I’ve interviewed with?) said that the interviews were offered to everyone who had made it to the next round
