Back to what seems so long ago, when I first applied to Penn, I had sent in a letter of recommendation from the Editor at the local newspaper that I write for. In February, she got a thank you note from the admissions people at Penn. She had written lots of letters in the past and never heard of that. My guidance counselors haven’t either…

Did anybody else have a similar experience? Do you think that this is a good thing?

The President Pro Tiem of my state senate wrote one for me and he recieved similar letter. None of my othere references received one so I think it's likely that Penn sends them to those they feel are "important," for lack of a better word.

Though it's a positive sign that your reccomendation will probably carry some heavy weight, it's not a sure thing that you are in. My senator recieved one of these at the beginning of November and then I was deferred.

Hope that helps.

Like amazon said, I think it's a good sign, but don't look too deeply upon it.

Good luck though!
