Thanking Professors/Advisors for a Rec?

What's the best way to say 'thank you' to a professor/college advisor for writing a transfer recommendation? A gift certificate to somewhere? To a restaurant? How much? How fancy? Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.

i have the same question... a professor just wrote me a very nice letter and i feel as i need to thank him somehow.

you actually got to see the letter? How? I thought supposedly the professors are sending the letters themselves?
But anyway, I think a thank you note via email usually should suffice

the profs can send them out themselves, but they can send you one too... not like you can stop the letter they already mailed out!

somehow i dont think a thank you is enough, especially since they spent a good few hrs probably writing the letter.. i was thinking of a box of chocolates or something

This is generally not true, recommendations to professors are almost like a routine. I'm sure most of the professors will have some sort of a general template, there is really not much to do other than adding a couple sentences of his personal opinion of you... Unless you impressed the professor so much that he/she decides to do something completely off the template for you, which I think is extremely rare. Professors generally are very busy but recommendation letters are not nearly as hard to do as you think they are. (But when you ask for one, do at least pretend that it is... for courteous reasons)

If you can actually get a copy of it for yourself, it's either that you did not waive the family educational right thing, or professor just gave you a personal copy. But usually if you do not waive the right, some college adcoms tend to suspect that you have something to hide... So generally I waive it and give the forms to a professor who I confidently believe will write a positive recommendation on my behalf

So I'm thinking of giving my professor a Starbucks card.

How much sounds good?

Both of my professors will receive a philosophy book.
