i'm applying to the school i want to attend ED and i'm pretty sure testing must be done by the october test date

wellll i went to sign up and THERE'S NO SEPTEMBER TEST DATE. i haven't taken the SAT yet (i've only taken the ACT) and my plan was to retake subject tests in september and take the SAT I in october. welllllllll now i guess i'll just take the SAT I in october and not get the opportunity to retake any of my subject tests for the school i'm applying to ED...

What school are you applying to? Here’s what I would do. Most people consider the ACT easier than the SAT, and since they’re interchangeable in admissions, you should prepare for the September ACT and then take your subject tests in October. There’s no real need to take the SAT I if you do well enough on the ACT, and like I said, most people do better on the ACT.

@silenceizsik, i appreciate the suggestion, but i would rather take the SAT I in october than subject tests (even though i do want to take subject tests as well). i still have a hard time believing that the sats and acts are regarded the exact same by adcoms, so i want to make sure to take both.

@rodney, i already am taking the sat in october. my problem is that i can’t retake the sat 2s since the sat 1 and 2s are on the same date, and there is no september test date.

Why not retake the ACT in September? You’ll have all summer to prep for it, and if you do well you’ll be able to submit your ACT with writing scores for ED. Most schools accept the ACT with writing in lieu of the SAT + SAT IIs. Since you can’t take any SATs in September, you’re not giving up anything by sitting the September ACT.

You’ll also know your score in advance before submitting your ED application. If you rely on your Oct SAT I test, you’ll have no idea what score you’re submitting.

^ Great point. Plus, I have found that it usually takes two sittings of the SAT to get your desired score, especially if you are transitioning from the ACT. Of course, this isn’t always the case, but practicing with practice tests only does so much; the experience of taking a real SAT is invaluable, and in your case, you won’t have that opportunity.

but wait i’m confused how will i NOT know what score i’m submitting if i send the october sat I? can’t i see it and then choose whether or not i want to send it?

Your scores will be available about 19 days after you take the test. October results will be available around October 28. I suppose you could wait to see your test results and then immediately order a copy for your ED school if your SAT score is better than your ACT scores, but for some ED due dates that’s cutting it close. You are going to be stressed enough getting your ED application in on time.

I think it would be much easier to concentrate on raising your ACT score than to try to get both an excellent SAT I score AND work on raising your SAT II scores. The subject test material is freshest at the end of the school year, and it will take a significant effort to retain that material and improve your understanding. If you still want to try the SAT route, you’ll probably need to commit to three more test dates: two for the SAT I, and one for the SAT II retakes. That’s a lot of testing for the fall of your senior year.
