lol but the 10 is bad too!! You can't escape the traffic.

It's better than 405 or 5 lol

take veteran to olympic and street it to union station

this would all be a lot more helpful to me if i had a car

Avoid the 405 period. I drive down to the San Gabriel Valley Area (Arcadia) at around 10pm. Sometimes if traffic was so bad, I would leave at 2am or so. It's nice when there's no traffic and you can buzz through at 100mph+. I get on Santa Monica if there's traffic on Willshire.

Edit: I take 405 to 10. 405 to 110 to 134 to 210 takes longer for me.

Edit: I notice a lot of closing of freeways for repairs after 11pm. Last week, the 10E to San Ber. was closed, detour via 60. Best times are usually 9:30pm-11:00pm in my opinion that way can use freeway you need. Also when I drove down to La Jolla, I noticed that the freeway via 5 has some weird detour (Forget the name).

If you're going down to San Diego for Thanksgiving Weekend, I wish you luck!

what about to norcal? we are leaving wed at abt 4... think it will be super bad? we have to go to the east bay.

i think once you leave grapevine, you're in the clear. it sounds like you'll get stuck in traffic though around that time.

definitely will....driving back to norcal is...yeah...not fun. =/

Orange County at 5-7pm? I know there's going to be traffic, since it's rush hour too (my last class is at 4)...just wondering how many hours?

So I've made a decision.

I'm not driving up Wednesday night. I'm driving up on Thursday morning (early.)

What are your thoughts, guys? Am I making a mistake?

Depends how early :)

You know you're not the only one thinking about the "delay one day" option.

I know. I was thinking 7 AM.

Hmm. Usually I'd say leave way earlier than 7 because traffic is usually already crappy by 7. But I guess if people aren't commuting to work, it might be better and 7 might be tolerable.

All i know is I drove to work from OC this morning and I left at FIVE FIFTEEN to avoid normal monday traffic.

Blah.

its all the freeways that will be jammed, why not use surface streets?

Because those get bad too, especially in certain directions.

It's a lose-lose.

for the OP, how about the train?

namaste,

Surface streets all the way from San Diego to the Valley?

Pass.

lol...I think he meant locally...:D

for the OP, how about the train?

mikemac: We've thought about it but then we're faced with my daughter getting from UCLA to Union station on Wednesday late afternoon which probably won't be that swift either.

Thursday morning is bound to be better than Wednesday late afternoon so I may head up then. I hope I'm not wrong.

Some feedback to anyone interested in this topic (for next year) -

I decided to not attempt the drive on Wednesday and do it on Thursday morning. This helped me avoid the overturned semi that caused all southbound lanes of the 405 to be shut down.

The drive from San Diego to UCLA on Thursday morning (left at 08:00) was a breeze. The traffic was light and the speeds not below the speed limit.

The trip back from UCLA to San Diego on Thursday (leaving UCLA around 10:15) was okay until somewhere before San Juan Capistrano where it slowed to stop and go almost the whole way to Oceanside with a couple of minor breaks in between. The southbound side was okay on my way up so this jam could have been avoided had I left earlier. It's not easy to convince a college student to get up early though. :)

Now, we'll see what Sunday's like for the return trip.
