The 12 Top College Rivalries- Newsweek

Two other Southern Rivalries:
One of my roommates was in Birmingham, Alabama for a few years and talked about "mixed marriages" of Auburn/Bama spouses.
Another family friend who transferred from Duke to UNC talked about her old bumper sticker saying "friends don't let friends go to Duke".

Here's a rivalry that I felt while doing college tours:

Florida State v. U of Florida

We toured Florida State and they refuse to mention "that OTHER Florida college" by name. My youngest D (who was just tagging along for the tours) bought a Florida State t-shirt and changed into it, then we ventured down to Gainesville to tour U of Florida but I made her change her shirt before she walked in!

Yikes!!

on all of the college rivalry shows, OSU and UMich is ranked as the fiercest rivalry in college sports... especially football.
and yes, the battle for the old oaken bucket (boiler and iu) is another HUGE rivalry.
i consider my self an authority on the subject cuz i did a project bout the top college football rivalries!
O-H! I-O!
go BLOW!
BOILER UP!

My personal "Top 12":

Harvard/Yale

Army/Navy

Michigan/Ohio State

Duke/North Carolina

Texas/Oklahoma (A&M is not UT's rival; it's UT's little brother)

Southern Cal/Notre Dame

Alabama/Auburn

Stanford/Cal
9 Florida State/Miami

Indiana/Purdue

South Carolina/Clemson

Kentucky/Louisville

harvard/yale... #1??? i wonder what school you go to...
seriously dude. it may be intense for the 4 or 5 people who pay attention to those school's sports teams... but seriously...
and alabama/auburn moves up.

My S, a Penn graduate attended a few Army-Navy games at Franklin Field. He was so impressed with the pageantry he called me from the game describing everything; he was particularly impressed with the sharp shooters positioned on the roof of the stadium since so many VIPs (including the President) were present.

ExplorerCY,
Actually, I attended neither Harvard nor Yale. But, I'm a college athletics fan, and the Harvard/Yale rivialry (aka, "The Game") is 124 years old... older than any of the other eleven on my list. They don't play for national titles now, but you have to tip your hat to the tradition.

Heck, if you're just basing it on who's good right now, move Alabama/Auburn down. Neither one won 10 games last year, neither played in a BCS Bowl last year, and neither is ranked in the pre-season Top Ten.

Venkat, clearly you've never been to a Columbia v. Princeton or Columbia v. Penn basketball game in February. It's intense and has been for decades. And yes, the Columbia v. Harvard football game (always the opening game of the season) is a big deal. Not quite as big as Harvard v. Yale, but a big deal nevertheless. I think the Yale Bowl still rates as one of the biggest college stadiums in America.

^I was at the last Columiba/Penn basketball game at the Palestra and it wasn't as exciting as some other games this year. I think I saw they won Ivy titles in women's fencing and men's baseball. Good for them.

By not looking overseas they missed one of the best (and oldest) rivalries:

Oxford vs. Cambridge

How can you not include Duke/UNC?

I don't know if a rivalry can get any more intense than this...
