The Abundance of Student Organizations

So, we have all heard about the 500-something student organizations at UVa that can satisfy any particular interest. I was browsing through the list the other day and I have already picked 2 that would I like to join. I was wondering if anyone else has given this some thought already. For the current students, what clubs are you part of and also feel free to share anything else you find significant regarding this topic. I am soo excited..

Bellydancing and Lacrosse def. because I do that already, but I want to do something new too.

might think about crew/rowing. didn't do it in HS but would like to. i wanna learn how to shoot as well-->valuable life skill imo

Does anyone know if they have innertube water polo? That seems like an immense amount of fun.

yes we do have innertube water polo intramurals!

I'm actually planning on rowing as well. I've rowed throughout high school, so i figured ill at least try it, and then if i find it takes up too much time ill probably just do some of the intramural sports offered. I'm sure there are other activities that id be interested in too, im gonna have to look through that list b4 i head down next fall.

yes! as many of the intramural sports i can fit in...flag football, basketball, baseball/softball or w/e...oh wow innertube water polo sounds like a BLAST, do you guys have an ultimate team? i've dabbled in that in at my HS

Go go UVA Bhangra team!

apkcavalier, I am into belly dancing as well...I am definitely joining the club there!

I have positions in Honor, UJC and an organization administered by the Office of Admissions.

I'd recommend against committing to more than one or two groups in your first semester. You'll have enough on you plate just getting used to academics, social life and living on your own.

I had some friends do crew and they all ended up quitting the team. They were told it would be weekdays only practice (afternoons) and it wouldn't really interfere with their studies but it ended up becoming a weekly 6 day practice with morning saturday practices. If you are serious about crew than you won't mind the practices but they were in it to get a workout in a structured enviornment.

there are many clubs to join and we have the activities fair during the first week that allows you see all the clubs.

cavalier302, you are a second year, correct? Is it typical for second years to hold office positions?

Could someone give me this link of this list..?

I hope theres a DDR club.

BGjeez, im a second year and I have several positions in organizations. Most UVA organizations care about ability more than seniority. Its entirely possible to join a group your first year and ahve a leadership position by 2nd semester of second year. Just make sure you show a great deal of passion and energy for it.

What do you think is a good number of organizations one can really commit to? I have always been against the whole club hopping and holding an officer position in 10 different clubs. Throughout my high school career, I devoted to mainly three organizations and that was even too much sometimes...and that's high school...I assume college would be...mmm busier?

Why don't you figure that out when you get here? Every organization is different and levels of participation can vary markedly within individual clubs. I recommend that you start slowly and find organizations that you find to be enjoyable, fulfilling and possibly helpful to some current of future goal (graduate school, career, personal fitness). On the other hand, you needn't feel obliged to even get involved during your first year - I certainly didn't. Different strokes for different folks.
