The Asian Anomaly

DISCLAIMER: I have no problems with Asians, and am not trying to stereotype in anyway, but…

Does anyone else notice that a large percentage of the CC community is asian? Doesn’t this seem strange when compared to the actual percentage of the asian population in the U.S.?

thats cuz asians obsess about college =P

doesn't it also seem strange that asians over overrepresented in top colleges (the ones that are popular on CC)? there you have it... a direct correlation

asians own =)

no offense, heh

It's no coincidence at all. Consider 1) there are more recent Asian immigrants to the US seeking technical jobs than people from any other continent, while immigrants from countries such as Mexico largely come over and work more blue collar jobs, 2) Asian parents, especially recent immigrants, often stress college more than most other parents, 3) there also seems to be more Asians paranoid about getting in to college than other ethnic groups (probably a result of 2), so it's no coincidence that most of them are on CC.

i am asian and my mom would consider it a major sin/disgrace if i went to a CC.

lol...worriedsenior you're a sinner

i (we) cant help it. its in our genes, mind whatever. asians: why cant u think about girls more ? they are better than college or education

I'm Hispanic, but isn't that still technically Asian?

Hispanic = American Indian + Spaniard

and

American Indian = Asian :o

'cuz i'm too busy thinking about boys! :p

anyways, like crichessill said, i think its something about our genes... stress about college --- passed on from generation to generation --- a very beloved quality indeed.

:D asians rule!!!!!!!!! :D

Actually, education has been an integration of Chinese culture for longer than you think. For the past two thousand years or so, Chinese culture had civil service examinations, examinations of confucian thought that allowed one to get a high paying official job via a degree. The first prep school was definitely not Phillips Exeter or some school in England, it was actually a refuge (1000+ years ago) of unorthodox Confucian interpretation. The first "cheaters" were found with Chinese robes littered with thousands of characters neatly scrawled on the sides. It's no surprise today that the asian emphasis on education exists - it has melded within the culture and Eastern philosophy/way of thinking.

I dont think u understand. i am 1st generation korean and my family came to America for opportunity to succeed. AS i grew up, i realized in order to succeed, i need a strong education to succeed. that why Asians come here to get confidence they can go get the best education they can.

It's a cultural thing. Isn't education embedded firmly into the Confucian values that are so dominant throughout Asia?

PS I also think the Jewish have a similar focus on religion, and they too are a small minority.

Maybe on the east coast, but on the west coast most Jews don't care about College. Most Jews I know out here are going to cal states.

I know a Jew going to a CC.

my parents would clearly kill me if i went to cc, they only accept universities

CC isnt even an option!

Parents: "what is CC? dropout school?!"

i'm asian, so naturally my sister's asian, and she's a high school dropout and currently attending a cc. it's extremely odd.

yea stress + college = asian = me
in my case, its more of personal pressure to do well than outside pressure

i was gonna mention jews also and then i saw the post
yea im jewish
but
the west coast remark is definetely not correct
and there is nothing wrong with a cal state.
what about cal poly? yea
but ya i think jews and asians are pretty analogous on their beliefs on education
