I am applying to UT Austin and it's my #1 choice! I am a girl from Atlanta, Ga and I will definitely rush. I toured UT but only had time to tour the Calloway House off campus dorms (which were AMAZING) but I have also heard a lot about The Hardin House. From pictures online, Calloway House looks nicer simply because it is newer, but I was wondering what y'all think is a better choice.

I definitely want to be in a dorm with a lot of Greeks. If you know, can you tell the benefits of both dorms? Also, I have heard that living in The Hardin House helps you get into a better sorority. Is that true?

Thanks! Sorry this is kind of jumbled but basically, being an out of stater who wants nice amenities but wants to be with other Greeks and sorority girls and likes to be in the social scene, should I live in the new Calloway House or the Hardin House?

MaineLonghorn, Thanks! Amenity wise, I would like to live in Calloway House because of how new it is, but I am concerned about getting into a sorority so do you think my chances are higher if I live in SRD or The Hardin House? Thanks!

My D lives in Callaway (we are OOS also) and she and her 3 roommates all pledged sororities. I’m not sure how the dorm you live in helps you pledge a sorority, since you only move in one day before Rush starts. As an OOS student, I think you improve your chances by meeting as many sorority girls as you can before school starts. UT Sorority Rush is all about connections, and many sororities have plenty of girls they already know that they can pull from. Callaway is an awesome dorm, very close to campus and the amenities are great. I don’t know much about Hardin or SRD, except that as MaineLonghorn indicates, there is lots of tradition associated with those dorms. Good luck!

Yeah, it won’t matter where you live. You’ll just be living with more girls in sororities if you’re in one of these nice dorms!

Two nice things about SRD - beautiful swimming pool and cute male waiters. There is also a fitness room that is new since I was there, and I noticed the attic study hall is much plusher! It is closer to the engineering/science part of the campus, which was great for me since I was an engineering major. I lived there all four years and even thought about living there during grad school, but I figured that would have been a little odd.

Maine Longhorn, did you ever regret not living near West Campus? My daughter has apps at SRD and Callaway, but Callaway has a waiting list … we waited too long. She also has an app at Hardin, but doesn’t want to live there now. It seems to be about location at this point and she feels she may be too far away if she lives at SRD. Thanks!

Like I said, it was close to the engineering and science buildings, so it worked well for me. But it didn’t bother me when I had classes near the Tower, either. It was a pleasant walk. She could always get a bike, too!
