The College Trousseau

ooooooooh. Well, I've been shopping lately, and other than the usual, I'm bringing:

*a hot pot (for my pasta!)
*a VERY comfy fold up chair for guests
*2 bread plates, bowls, dinner plates, sets of silverware, and 4 glasses.
*a tall standup lamp with several arms
*desk lamp
*bulletin board
*Glue-on-the-wall face mirror

I really want to bring this perfect night table I saw today to put besides my bed, but will I have space? It's not too big....same size as a mini fridge--and it locks! Would that be too much? My mother and I haven't a clue what I should buy now, and what I should wait for to talk with roommates.....

j'aime-
I would wait until a) you find out who you're roomies are and b) stick to the essentials until you get to NYC. For example, I really want these cute storage bins for under my bed and would like to bring my lamp from next year. however, I'm waiting to discuss with roomies and untl I get to NYU. my parents agreed to ship any extra stuff I wanted.

elvenqueen is right. Don't be buying a bunch of stuff before talking to your roommate and confirming what size room you're in.

yeah you are definitely going overboard

Desk lamp is unncessary, in my experience, even in Weinstein.

Don't bring extra chairs or tables - if NYU finds them, you'll have to take them out and throw them away. The dorms and furniture are kept to the California fire standard, which means that a lot of outside goods don't make the cut. Leave that stuff at home - it'll save you the aggravation of dragging it to school and back, you won't have your RA on your back about illegal furniture, and you'll have one less fire hazard.

Be very careful about things that get glued, taped, or nailed to the walls. If they cause noticable damage, NYU can fine you for the cost of repairs, even if it's just pinholes on the wall. Don't take the chance of getting hit with a ridiculous repair bill for something that small.

Talk to your roommates before bringing stuff. There's no need to have 13 cups, 2 floor lamps, and 3 rugs between the two (or three or four) of you. Be reasonable - how often are you going to entertain guests in your room? What are you actually going to use? Are you going to be okay if it gets broken, spilled on, stepped on, crushed?

i personally would wait... but I might disagree with shades_children on desk lamps. I hated relying on the obnoxious fluroscent overheads in my hs dorms. They actually give off a depressing light tone/shade/ color and I found it to be very dreary in the winter (less natural light). Now I would try to team up with my roomies to make a lightinh situation that is more controlable than the overhead.
Also, I believe that not bringing a desk lamp can cause some rooming tension. Nowhere on the housing form does it really ask about sleeping habits and if you want to go to sleep but you're roommate needs to study then you're not going to want that overhead light on. Thus... a desk lamp is helpful

i'd get a desk lamp, simply because the light fixtures in the desks and in the rooms themselves are harsh and hard on the eyes (to me anyway). regular lamps are good because the light is softer and you can direct the light where you want.

I advised people not to bring desk lamps because I'm under the impression that all desks come with desk lamps built in, but I could be wrong. I agree - they're absolutely essential when you want to work when your roommate's sleeping. They're fluorescent, though, so if you can't stand that, you may want to look into bringing something small.

wooooooooow. Thank you ALL for the advice--I really needed this feedback. I will bring a desk lamp, because if there's ANYthing I hate, it's to have only one general, fluo light. In fact, I'll beg my roomies never to light it--I'll buy as many lamps to compensate. But before bringing my stand up lamp, I'll talk to everyone else and I definitely won't be bringing the other knickknack. :)

My daughter just finished her freshman year and she took a 2 drawer metal file cabinet that locks and used that as a bedside table. It fit perfectly and gave her plenty of space to lock valuables when she wasn't around, like her laptop, digital camera, etc. You can wait and buy there at Office Depot or any place like that.

oh really!? What dorm was she in?

That's a great idea ncmom. Thanks!
