I just got the email telling applicants when decisions would go out. I just found it odd that they gave us the opportunity to withdraw our apps this late into the admissions process. Any thoughts on this?

Saves paper and maybe someone on the edge can get in?

They asked whether you wanted to withdraw your app?

Yep...if you so wish to withdrawl...do so by this email

haha yeah, that's so random.. like, if i wanted to do that, wouldn't i have done that by now? and seriously, i've waited for seven months for this day.

^ exactly what I think. Even if I don't want to go (which is completely not true,) I'd not waste my months of waiting by withdrawing 6 days before the decision comes out.

I hate that the e-mail says 6:00 EST, though. ): Shouldn't it be 5:00 EST in accordance with the Ivy contract thing?!

i was so nervous when i saw that in my inbox. i thought it was "THE" email. i had to brace myself before opening it.

maybe the acceptance rate was a record low this year so by asking people to withdraw, there will be more space for other applicants if people do withdraw

it's not random, if you withdraw, then you won't be accepted and their yield rate will go up because someone who is more likely to accept their offer of admission will get an acceptance letter. The applicants who will be waitlisted in a week might be accepted if the applicants who will be accepted withdraw their applications now.

It might also be a "last chance" kind of thing for people who have gotten in ED or EDII somewhere else since submitting their Columbia application. Obviously, it's much more politically appropriate to withdraw before receiving a decision in those cases.

doesn't everyone get the email though...? If so, shouldn't it have no implication on your acceptance?

i'm pretty sure everyone got the e-mail. did anyone here apply to Columbia and not get it?? and it doesn't have any implication on your acceptance, it's just that if you've gotten in ED II somewhere and need to withdraw your columbia app but haven't ever gotten around to it, they want you to do it now. better late than never. because that way, a space can open up for someone else knowing that someone who has applied will not go if offered admission!

I haven't gotten this email. I did apply early decision though, and was deferred, so maybe that has something to do with it?

quixotic- no i was deferred and got it.

The answers in posts #10 and #11 are both credible and logical, and were my two thoughts when I read the initial post.

Woohoo, I'm number 10.

There are always applicants who don't rescind their RD applications even though they have been accepted ED to a school or have just plain changed their minds. More colleges should remind applicants to advise them of a change in their situation.

Uh crap. I hope I get this email eventually?

if you don't get by Monday, I would email admissions and make sure they have your correct email.
