What does everyone do to contribute to their communities? Any unique/interesting stories or experiences?

I work in the neo-natal intensive care unit at the hospital by my house. Sometimes it's really depressing to work there. I have to see all these babies that were born early, have breathing tubes, and are surrounded by monitors. One of the worst was this preme that had 2 broken legs and a lot of other problems. He was there for about 3 months. I got to know the parents really well. The worst day by far was when one died; it was several months early and so tiny.

No interesting/unique experiences for me. That's my whole problem! =)

Although mine isn't as intense as cowtippers, I do the JDRF Walk for a Cure every year, and people bring monkies! It's fun to be running (I run it, goes a lot faster) along with a guy with a monkey on his shoulder. There are also puppies too! Makes the running part more enjoyable.

I've been trying to find volunteer opportunities for awhile now, but no luck.

NHS president. my sponsor piles stuff onto me. also, im in an environmental service group that does something pretty much every saturday morning.

Most of my community service has been done through clubs- NHS, CA Scholarship Federation, and Key Club. I also volunteer for the GOP during election seasons, which is always, er, interesting... Let's just say I've gotten used to having doors slammed in my face and people hanging up on me.

I've always wanted a monkey...

Raychul07, I apologize if I've hung up on you, but I always hang up on political people, or I waste 20 minutes of their time.

Oh! I forgot...I help out at in the first and second grade Sunday school room at church on Sundays. I'm trying to think of a way to make that more effective/helpful...maybe I could help them fundraise for something? Not sure.

I volunteer almost every week at the hospital. One of my most common duties is to replace water pitchers for the patients. Some of them are really sick, and sometimes it's scary and/or sad.

Doesn't come close to premature babies though...

I coach a special olympics tennis team every fall and then i volunteer with the basketball and track teams in the off season

I volunteer for the Florida Wildlife Hospital and for a nearby middle school (my mom is a teacher there).

nowadays i volunteer at the childrens hospital. previously on the organ transplant floor, now i moved to the oncology floor. i work in the playroom and help these kids with their arts and crafts, playing games, etc.

i love it.

Talk to your teachers, see if they need any help.
Over the summer, you can be a counselor in training.
Or tutor kids in your school during lunch or on weekends.

um, every year i go to xicotepec, mexico for a service project during spring break. it's definitely the most amazing experience ever. I translate for doctors during medical examinations and it's so sad becase all of the children are soo malnourished. it's definitely been the best experience in my life and i'm going back for the third time this march and i can't wait!
also i'm president of our schools 1440 Interact club (it's called 1440 because there are 1440 minutes in a day, and our motto is to not spend them all on ourselves, it's pretty neat.) anyway, we hold an annual ballroom dance for habitat for humanity every spring and it's always a huge success and lots of fun. and then we do like basically different volunteer activities every week whethere it's at the public library, the hospital, retirement homes, the children's hospital, habitat for humanity, domestic violence shelter, the homeless shelter, crisis center, etc....

I go on my computer and try to find a cure for malaria...my guidance counselor apparently doesn't think that counts for community service (but going to math competitions does).

how is math competitions community service?

My school is weird. Apparently ALL clubs count as community service if you take the time to log the hours into the computer...which I unfortunately don't do.

I've done 200+ hours at the local hospital. More specifically, I organized/deliever meds in the pharmacy.

I also have a few other oddball hours piled up for doing things for clubs and friends' parents.

I've volunteered/was a CIT at a local camp, and helped watch some of the more "special needs kids". I only did it for a summer(250+) not sure if that counts though?

Anyone?
