The Content of a College Student's bag

I will be a college student in a few months and I was wondering, what do real college students have in their bags? I want to buy a new backpack, except I have no idea what I would be carrying in it. Do you carry your laptop (in that case i wanna buy a laptop backpack)? Do you carry your heavy textbooks to every class????

So i want to do a small survey:
1) Do you carry around your laptop or heavy textbooks to class (do you have to?)?
2) Could you very briefly describe the contents of your bag on a typical school day?

Your answers and experiences are greatly appreciated not just for me, but hopefully for all the people that are going on to college.

1) Bring laptop to certain classes, hardly ever bring textbooks.

2) Laptop, two or three notebooks, personal response system, and pencils.

laptop
pens/pencils
calculator
clicker(student response thing for chem)
water bottle
wallet and keys
notebooks for classes
lax ball (always have one, i carry one around on game days to get me pumped up)
change for the vending machines
usually other random junk

I use a regular backpack, not a laptop bag or anything.

Laptop, books, calculator, and a binder or two.

I use a strap over type of backpack where it goes over my shoulder. Um it sucks walking on a huge campus with big books and a labtop so I don’t have those in my backpack. I just carry my notebooks, pencils(including a few #2’s for scantrons), pens, eraser, and a calculator. I tend to at times carry my smaller books to class, but bigger books like Bio books I leave in my room.

so from your responses im guessing it’s mostly your laptop and notebooks and personal random stuff…the heavy textbooks stay in your dorm then???(youre never asked to bring them to class or anything?)

Laptop
Calculator
Pencils and pens (get multiple colors, including something exotic like bright orange)
Eraser
A folder with loose leaf paper
Stapler (you will want a good stapler, frequently people in the class need them and you can play hero to a lot of people)

I found notebooks to be rather useless as I took all of my notes on my laptop. However, a few pieces of loose leaf paper is handy in case of pop quizes or anything like that.

I’ve very rarely had to take a large textbook to class, but if I’m wanting to do some homework between classes I have to take that one with me.

I can’t concentrate if I have my laptop with me, so I opt out of bringing it - unless I’ve purposefully brought it as a distraction to a dull class. I also can take better notes with a notebook.

My bag usually contains folders, multi-subject notebook, pens. I’ve never taken the book to class except for those lovely English classes where the book is usually required. Otherwise, I don’t bring it.

1.) I carried my laptop a few times when I knew I had to be on campus late with nothing to do. It became useless though because I agree, it’s easier for me to take notes with a notebook. There should be computer labs around your campus you can use for typing papers between classes or if you get bored on a lunch break. As for textbooks, just see if your professor uses them the first couple of classes. They’ll probably say right away if you will need yours every day.

2.) I just looked in my backpack from last semester and found:

folders, still full of notes and handouts
notebooks(1 per class worked for me; some you might not even need a whole notebook)
highlighters
calculator
those annoying CDs that come with textbooks
a CD I’ve probably been looking for for months!!! (I’m glad I came here!)
extra mechanical pencil erasers
a bumper sticker from my school I still need to put on my car

And yes, keep some loose leaf paper handy for essay exams.

I’m definitely not the most organized person ever. You’ll probably find yourself sticking random junk in your backpack- flyers and little info. books or brochures on stuff you don’t even care about. I also found a plastic water bottle that I wouldn’t have drunken out of since the beginning of May…

I guess I should clean out my backpack!

The only reason you would need to carry your laptop around was if 1. you wanted to use it to takes notes in class or 2. you wanted to do homework on it at the library. If not, you just keep it in your room.

And yes, you also might need to carry “heavy textbooks”, but keep in mind not all textbooks are heavy… it’s not HS anymore. There are a lot of paperback textbooks. You obviously wouldn’t carry them all at once, just what you needed for class at that time. Some classes you will never need your textbook, and others it’s really helpful to have them, i.e. when you are going over homework problems in class and the problems/answers are in the book.

taser…

10101010

Lightweight drawstring with the notebooks I need for the upcoming classes, and a pen in my pocket.

i hardly ever need to take a bag to class. i just bring a pen and two notebooks to my morning classes, and then go back to the dorms for lunch and switch notebooks.

Nope to both. I bring a notebook (I keep one for each class) to take my notes in.

Pens, paper, cell phone, iPod, gum, wallet, a light jacket, bottle of water.

Freshman year, I usually bring a book or two along with a couple of notebooks and lab notebooks. This past sophomore year, it was just notebook, water bottle, and glasses (pencil, keys, wallet, phone is a given). Really simple and since Im a science major, I just leave those large textbook at my place.

I don’t think I’ve ever brought a backpack to college.

I’m taking an early summer credit this month. Even though I don’t think it counts since it is only one class, I’ll go ahead and chime in. I have two backpacks…one is just like a Nike sling thing that goes on my back, and the other is a conventional backpack for when I’ll need my laptop. But I like to go as light as possible…

Nike sling days: iPod, small/thin binder, pen and pencil, response clicker
Backpack days: iPod, small/thin binder, pen and pencil, response clicker, water bottle, and my laptop when necessary

My backpack usually contains:

-Notebooks
-One binder with all of my papers/assignments
-Any books I need for class/homework
-Calculator, as needed
-Many pens and mechanical pencils w/ a couple No. 2 pencils for scantron (I am the writing utensil hero)
-Cell phone
-Tide pen
-Flash drive

I have a laptop but I almost never bring it because it is more of a hassle to carry than it is worth.

Things I bring:

-My laptop
-Folders/Notebooks for the classes I am going to
-Textbook ONLY if the Professor said to bring it (ask on the first day of class if you will need to bring it, usually they will just tell you)
-Calculator
-Pen or pencil
-iPod
-I carry my phone and wallet in my pockets.
-Although I haven’t seen other people do this, I always have napkins/paper towels in my backpack. (You never know when you might spill something or need a napkin, it comes in handy very often actually)

I think thats about it. If I’m driving somewhere I’ll just bring my keys, if I have a meeting after class then I’d bring any I need for that. Usually I just go back to my room after class and leave my bag there so theres really no point in bringing anything other than what I need for class in it.
