The Envelope

the day has finally come… the US Air Force Academy is willing to take me on.

I hope they’re up to challenge !

JK

i am extremely excited.
can’t wait for BCT :D

CONGRATS!!!

way to go bud, glad to hear the good news, iam only a fresh week off of receiving tht long awaited envelope and boy it feels good ehh?

see you in June!!!

Congratulations!!!

Congrats! I guess we'll see you soon. ;)

Congratulations! Welcome to the class of 2012!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

That is fantastic news,zzz!

Wear your AFA T-shirt tomorrow (maybe for a whole week!)!

I apologize for the rather "non sequitur" post (although it did seem like an appropriate place to ask), but what exactly is in "the envelope"? I've heard it desribed as a white parcel that is celebrated by few, and may create random kindness towards the mailman; but what exactly does it contain?

Good to hear it. I know several of the people who will be working Beast this summer, and believe me, it's more of a question as to whether you are up to the challenge.

Keep working hard, and stay enthusiastic about coming here. It will help as you wait.

EDIT: The "envelope" is the Offer of Appointment package. It contains the stuff for you to "sign the dotted line". Pretty much, it means you're in, as long as something unexpected doesn't happen.

Congratulations!

"I hope they're up to challenge !" :D

i will wear my USAFA shirt (s) all week... maybe longer. IDK

I have like a dozen... but you can't have enough ! right?

thanks for the congrats.

can't wait to meet so of you people in april and june.
I think we've got a great future ahead.

Just make sure you wear usafa shirts and gear on I-day, and I'll be happy! ;)

As will af16 ;)
Only if you guys aren't with him...:D

The funny, yet not so funny thing is that the majority of appointees going to the academy don't actually view this forum. There are usually a few that are so proud of their accomplishments and their appointment that they definitely arrive on that first day with the Air Force shirts, hats, jackets, etc... on thinking that everyone else is going to be wearing this stuff, or issued it, so why not be the first. Hopefully you all wait until their parents and family are gone and they are on the bus before you embarrass the hell out of them. LOL!!!

This does bring up a very important thought. Many of these appointees; like some of you existing cadets who frequent this forum; were somewhat of a big fish at their/your high schools. Many of you had the 3.8-4.0gpa unweighted. Were in the top 10 of your class in ranking. Great SAT/ACT. Sport jocks. etc.... The point I'm trying to make is that a real eye opener for many that I've known who have gone to the academies; as well as your select IVY league schools; is that you aren't all that special anymore once you get there. Instead of being in the top 1% of your class, you're more the average now. That can be a little hard on the ego. Athletics is the same. You were a great high school jock, now you're struggling to stay on the team because everyone else is just as good.

Luckily my son knows how to be humble. I've also been able to give him pointers about the military and academy in general. I've also never mentioned his name or specs, scores, etc... on this forum and he doesn't get on the forums at all. Sorry for hijacking the thread, but there's a lot of surprises and shocks coming for many of the new appointees. Thankfully many of you current and past cadets have made it a little easier for those who had the initiative to discover sites like this. Thanks.....

Ironically, I just wrote back in a PM the same thing you did about going from big fish to average. Nobody expects it and are just so shocked when they are struggling here. It can be difficult to help when they can't accept that they aren't the top gun necessarily.

This is getting ahead of things, but I remember Potterfan calling just before Prog (Mid Semester Grades) terrified she would be on AC/Pro. She vented, and week later called to say well I guess I'm just a "B" student here. At home I practically had to talk her off the roof when she got a "B" in something. As final rolled around we talked about grades again, and this time her response was priceless "Dad, I just can't worry about it, there are to many other things to worry about, and I would just go crazy worrying about things that are over." You will learn to work with what you can, and not sweat the small stuff.

yeah... a whole campus full of "type A"... super scholars... kickass people !

being humble is a great thing.

should we really wear our USAFA gear to I-day?? or is that some joke... intended to be something...?

Just a joke. :) Do that and you will probably start out your time at the Academy with a horde of cadre coming at you, or...you can be nondescript and not get noticed...as much.

Congrats zzz! Your hard work has paid off, now you have your "ticket" to start working even harder :).

My guess is they are joking about I-day. It sounds to me that you shouldn't wear anything that will bring attention to yourself--especially AF attire. I think clothes with NO wording, and a piece of humble pie will get you through that first day in pretty good shape.

I cannot agree more with all the previous posts about humility. It could be the most important virture needed at the Academy and basically, in life. The people that I respect the most are people that would NEVER mention their own accomplishments.

Way to go, Z!! Enjoy that envelope!!

Yes, non-descript clothing is a good choice for I-day. Some people seek out attention (and get it!) on I-day.

Basically, don't wear AF clothing or anything that seems to be boasting/prideful (or rediculously colorful).

On I-day, I wore a gray T-shirt from my youth group (nothing particularly noteworthy on it) and some cargo pants. Nobody mentioned anything about it...whereas the person who wore the "Train This!" T-shirt DID attract a LOT of attention.

congrats cya in june!!

Im here at the cadet library and let me tell ya I can't wait to finally be apart of the Academy and out of the prep school haha.

enjoy the rest of your year!
