I find it kind of funny that so many sudents (specially American- here in Canada as well) are interested in McGill university. My parents in the Academia and I've spoken to my research mentors and stuff as well and I just wanted to share a conversation I redecently had with a professor I talked to (who is neither from McGill or UoT but is VERY well connected, very famous/resourceful, and funny) said that Maclean's rankings were a joke because the editor probably felt bad for choosing UoT for so many years (10 consecutive years).

Apparently Quebec government/Quebec businesses aren't too fond of the university (he was like if QC could, they'd remove McGill and put it somewhere else) and so on a graduate level McGill gets ZLIP in research funding contracts for its size compared to other Quebec universities like Universit

yeah this is basically what ive been trying to tell the american applicants on here but one of hte reasons they like McGill is because it carries such a reputable name in the states. Things like funding troubles/recent failures arent going to immediately affect an international reputation.

UofT is hte best school in Canada overall in terms of grad school for sure...there is no doubt about this one. Undergrad however is about the same everywhere...id say Queens is the best (mostly because UofT and McGill are HUGE). My mom is a medical prof at UofT and i can attest to it being a terrific school with a name on the rise in the states (even though its already got a solid name)

just a random factoid - Yale Law School (generally seen as the best and def. the most selective) only interviewed on site at two canadian schools: UofT and McGill. McGill had 1 student selected this year and UofT 2.

McGill has been underfunded by the Quebec government (they recognized it like 5 years ago) but research-wise, it still has the highest grant money per full-time faculty in all of Canada. McGill is more diverse than UofT but about half its size. But the UofT website must be abysmally bad to be worse than the McGill one (I figure a blind, dyslexic monkey could've have done a better job at designing the McGill website).

^LOL. imagines I went back to see the UoT site (I haven't checked it out since the beginning of January) and it's changed... it REALLY used to reek -i'm not sure if it still does- I hate horrible organization in sites.

frankly I think schools like Mount allison or st francis Xavier for undegrad are very solid and more Americans should consider applying to those schools. There as a competitive as any top US liberal arts at least in terms of academics but they do tend to cost more. Also, geographically those areas of Canada are quite beautiful.

very true, im a fan of those schools - especially st fx and acadia

problem is that most americans are only willing to leave the country for a school that has name recognition for when they return...ie McGill and to a lesser extent UofT, UBC, various special programs at select schools (Waterloo Eng/Math/Comp, Queens Biz, York Biz, Mac Health Sci, etc). I suppose it is a legitimate concern.

St FX was actually high up on my list (i'm an American). Nova Scotia scared me off....and I was not sure how good their engineering program was. If I wanted econ then I would have applied. Plus at the time I had tons of other schools on my list.

McGill is definitely the best and the most prestigious school in Canada. The students who have been rejected by McGill all try to attack its population.

Just think about it. McGill has much fewer students than Toronto, and yet much better known. This explains everything. And it has the most grant money among Canadian universities. It is like a private univ., that's the point. So even though it doesn't get enough funding from Quebec government, it still gives much higher stipends than Toronto etc.

McGill is 13th North American college in Times Higher Education.

And it is the 21st in the world.

Now how come it is 40-50 in USNEWS? That's totally illogical.

Also, Ivyleager, get a life. Everyone knows u r a McGill-enemy, and that u r trying to attack its reputation in every forum. Same with acceptedalready. There is a pattern to that.

Nope, I am just against those who are biased. i am always on the side of the right!

If there r 2 biased pple here, one is you, the other is ivyleaguer. U both, apparently, got rejected by McGill, and expressing your hatred here.
