The Hindustani College Admissions Thread #20

Namrata-“I am SOOO glad at least SOMEONE is as wound up as me!!”

Imagine someone hundred times as wound up as you are and then some more and now maybe you might be as worked as me :P

I did not know he got into UofC EA. Seriously, that is very awesome. It has 9 nobel proffs in economics… AND also has Raghuram Rajan, which again is wow. Congratulations, goodwood (no matter how late!). :)

You were saying?

It’s not just the faculty. The method of teaching there is different from the conventional stuff at other great schools, they keep trying new methods which work very well, or so I hear. The student body, reputation of the academics there, and overall quality of undergrad education gained is unbeatable.

Violator: Somehow I truly think that the only way to express ‘anxiety’ by writing is by using a zillion exclamation marks and by not letting go of keys once you press them for the added effect.
Ok, deep breath in. I am reading my first ever Mills and Boon… god, what crap. Helps me calm down though!

I don’t know pixie, one of my brother’s office mate is from UChicago and he finds that guy pretty stuffed up with self importance. And, since my brother lived in the US for 5 years, he says he has met many Chicago people and invariably they are rather arrogant… I know this is highly co-incidental but then, maybe it says something more about that school. Anyway, it still is a brilliant school and I would have loved to go there. It just did not pay for me though!

Where do you plan to go finally, pixie?

Is that so?
Have you heard about the cliques that are a major portion of most Ivy League schools, especially Harvard, Princeton and Yale?
Major portion of the student body at each school is made up of rich, snobby, prep school kids.

All my decisions aren’t out yet.

Oh yeah, have heard that too. Somehow, a sister of mine who’s attended Chicago, Cornell and Harvard at one or the other point of her ed, confirms this about Chicago too. So I am rather inclined to believe so many experiences. Of course, it is not a blanket opinion and I am sure there are hundreds of very polite, very nice people there.
I am sure though that I would have been completely arrogant for getting through Chicago… it has Raghuram Rajan who has been my hero for so long. I follow his blog regularly and, infact, my essay was written about it. :). You are VERY lucky, goodwood!

Hey Violator, I am free if you want anyone to read your essays! I was told mine were pretty good… I don’t know really, I can give you my two cents. :). But, seriously, you need to stop worrying now. Reviewing essays now won;t help!

I agree that one’s experiences play a large part in molding one’s opinion. Are your brother and sister similar to you?

My experiences otoh, have been completely in the opposite. My UChicago interviewer and I had a very good rapport, and all the undergrads on the uchicago forum on CC seem to be very nice, interesting and helpful, with defined opinions and issues that they care for. I also disagree that getting into a particular college should be a major factor in turning one into an arrogant person.
It’s just a college in the end, made up of students just like us.:)

From what I know, people at uchicago tend to be intellectual, sometimes overly so, and like to have intelligent and interesting conversations at all times, even during breakfast, and that comes off as arrogant to some.

I know it will not help… But i just want to know what went wrong on my CMU app. So i thought might as well ask a couple of people to read it.

Omg thanks for having my (UChicago’s) back Pixie! SUCH FEW people understand what the University is all about! I keep getting asked if I got into UChicago EA why I took it instead of applying to HYPSM+ and i’m tired of explaining lol. Where all are you applied and why not UChicago?

beckons, it sometimes seems to be pretentious and snobby and all, but thats just the outer layer… not to mention a lot of people are intimidated by UChicago people’s intellectuality (hahaha a perfect example of the so called snobby attitude, which I promise I do not have)

Also, I have cooled down now so you guys don’t need to judge me by how I type, it was a bust of energy :P

^good to see you back to normal. Recovery doesn’t seem 100% though.:stuck_out_tongue:
And np with the defense part. Trust me, I know. Painfully aware of the fact. :/

What else is new? Are there any more decisions before D-Day? ;)

EDIT: And I did apply to Uchicago, goodwood. I was waitlisted. Full FA working against me? I can only guess. Anyway, I was very disappointed.

Sorry about your waitlist… Full FA as an international? You’re practically telling them to reject you! I think the fact that they waitlisted you shows how qualified you are… They’re the poorest University with int’l fin aid, which sucks because that fact is painfully visible in some of their acceptances… whispersin my hs. Haha, i’m so screwed when I reveal my identity.

Hey Pixie was just wondering how were your admissions so far got into any plzace that you really wanted to? How many are you waiting on?

^^goodwood, it’s okay. I had known that it’s very bad with FA for Int’ls, but oh well, I liked it enough to spend days on the application. I know only one person in Delhi who they accepted, and she’s an okay applicant, not bad. Good academic record, SATs, but boring ECs and boring essays. Sometimes, it’s disappointing to see what kind of people actually got in when I didn’t.
But goodwood, I’m sure that you’ll be more than satisfied with the student body at said school! You don’t have any obligation to mingle with South Asian crowd there much. ;)

Violator, I got into a few near safeties, waitlisted at some, and am waiting on a few more.

Haha Pixie, to be be honest, I sort of am not too fond of Indian students (who are going to the US etc)… the only decent/sensible people i’ve found are on this thread. So yeah, I don’t :). Btw, the reason UChic’s admission was so erratic is, I think, because they got a new counselor for India (Rosemartilini someone). I’m sure it’s that; she came from Booth so she may not know the typical “UChicago student”; then again, they are becoming more mainstream. Anywho, i’m sure you’ll get into a great uni that isn’t chindi with finaid.

@collegebeckons

Raghuram Rajan, FTW!!! Always been a big fan of his. :D

Be needy, don’t be greedy. =p

Whoa. I was so misunderstood. I love chicago. I spent a large amount of time on its essay also… Told ya, raghuram rajan is there and he’s been my idol for long. Also, it has the best buildings and infrastructure too!! I could have given everything to get admitted. I was just talking about what i had heard from
people much older than me and much more experienced than me. I am sorry if it was offensive in any way. I dint mean to be! Best of luck for it!

And why would anyone judge anyone else by the way they type? Everyone is special in his own right and way. Seriously, not done at all. Just cus some don’t play at being mature and staid and calm all the time does not mean they are in any way inferior. Way to be arrogant.

Anyway, pixie, i hope you get chicago and everywhere else you dream of. Seeyou.

Is this one mentioned in this week’s Brunch? The first ever Indian edition of M&B by Milan Vohra?

Haha CB (can I call you that?) around 10-15 pages back we were kinda judging people by the way they type, which I defended (obvious from the way I type sometimes lol). Also, I didn’t really misunderstand you, if you applied you obviously liked the place…

Also, to all who applied, UCHICAGO ESSAYS FTW [find x here]

You must have a really big old heart for all that love collegebeckons. :D

goodwood: good luck for uchicago. I think I’ve pretty much guessed which school you are at. But that’s only because I’ve known Ani for so long now (no, he didn’t tell me).

EDIT: I did Find X too! I absolutely adore UofC essay prompts. I wanted to do the “what do you want to dissolve” one, but didn’t have the time to compose a new essay. I had to make do with adjusting one I wrote for something else, which thankfully fit Find X too. Tbh, I feel that Find X fits just about any frickin topic, because X could stand for anything. I really didn’t get why so many people took it in a mathematical way.
