Hello, all! I read recently that AFA counts the math portions of the SAT and ACT more heavily than the english portion. Problem is, my english scores are higher than the math part lol…which test scores would you say are better?

SAT: Math 640 CR 680 Writing 620

ACT: Math 26 English 35 Science 32 Reading 32 Writing 08

I feel that if I could raise my math score on the ACT, that that test would be overall stronger than the SAT. What do you guys think? Which test should I retake? Which one is better for admissions (score wise)?

it doesn’t matter which test you take. usafa will take your best. definitely retake…your math scores do need improvement. whichever test you feel you can do better on, go ahead and do that.

it’s okay if your english scores are better than your math but it would be good to improve those math scores.

I think your math scores for SAT and ACT are actually almost the same, I believe a 650 on the SAT is a 26 on the ACT, but like missmuff said, they take your best score from each area so just retake whichever one you feel you can do better on

You’re SAT scores would get you in 100% with out a doubt. However, you didn’t state your GPA so you’re still up in the air. But, you DEFIANTLY do not have to worry about taking the test over again

I would re-take the ACT, just concentrate and study for the math, since the AFA superscores, if you could bring it up to a 28, your overall ACT would be higher than your SAT and that would be the one they take. Right now the ACT is higher since you are at a 31, but at 32 it goes up to 1410-1450 SAT. The problem is the math is lower. Remember PAR is 60% of your WCS.

One thing to also realize it is called the WCS for a reason. Your athletics and ECs do matter too!

Finally where you are from matters too, highly competitive areas like VA, MD, NY and CO, typically don’t give out more than 1 nom. Thus, you might have the 50% score for acceptance rates, but never win an appt because somebody else on your slate, took that ACT one more time and got a 32, making their WCS score higher.

I’m going to “weigh in” on this and you might not like my comments but trust me, they’re from the heart.

I would retake BOTH tests because I see something with the SAT I’d like to see changed and with the ACT something I’d like to understand.

First…your scores ARE VERY good. Do NOT get the idea that I think they’re not; they are very good. HOWEVER…math is a HUGE thing for the SA’s…all of them. And while a 640M score on the SAT is VERY GOOD; it’s not “remarkable” for an academy applicant. In truth, it’s probably “middle of the road.” I would MUCH MUCH MUCH more like to see your scores flip-flopped: 640V, 680M. THAT would be, in my mind, a much better hit.

ACTs…they’re also VERY GOOD!!! HOWEVER…you have 30+ in all areas EXCEPT math, and that’s (IHMO) rather low. To me it’s a blinking neon light begging the question: WHY???

You don’t want folks to ask those kind of questions. You literally want to blow them away with awe!!! And you’re not far from that, again IMHO.

So…I would retake BOTH tests. If you get that math on the ACT to the low/mid 30’s…okay, you’re fine. If you get the SAT math over 700…again, I think you’d be sitting very nicely!

Until that though…personally, if I were your ALO…I’d be pestering you to retake the tests.
