Tilzil7: haha i’d like to hear that from HIM (is that right?) and hmm i have no clue as to how i should respond to that. app essays are beyond my level of expertise :o

Veethiv: I WISH! it’s such a pretty place my dad goes there every week, and i’ve only been there twice. and WHILE i was there, i was taking some useless health course for school, so I ended up working in the lobby of the stupid hilton hotel while my brother and my parents were spazzing out at a RedSoxxx game >:( welcome to my life.

To be honest, my EC short essay and the common app essay ideas ( I am yet to start writing one) are completely different from one another.

Okay, writing about India’s economic conditions would sound cliched, would it?
I think many Indians would mention the disparity et al in their essays, I am planning on doing the same. But kinda skeptical bout it

Veethiv! I was initially considering writing my CA essay on reservation in Indian Institutions - specifically, it’s importance and why it should be in place and not be looked down at. But then my dad said it wouldn’t be wise since I will not be able to provide an effective viewpoint because I haven’t been affected by it. He was right. My current essay is much more personal and unorthodox in it’s structure and language. I would highly recommend talking about something that you have experienced and felt deeply. It adds that “wow” factor. I try to keep in mind whenever I write essays that I am trying to tell a story and it has to be so good as to rival those of any of the Disney ones ;)

Unfortunately, it takes me an immense amount of time to get started because of the unusual tone of my essays. They are sometimes overly descriptive. A trait, I have no doubt, picked up from reading the works of Christopher Paolini. Maybe that is why I have trouble being precise. I just keeping on saying stuff because there is so much to talk about. :)

college college here we come,
battling with the world’s finest,
and even the scum
we ain’t got no ECs
haven’t written no thesis
we ain’t got ‘hooks’
and we are no crooks
we are favored neither by the odds
nor by the gods
you want essays showing passion
and initiative,integrity
but ours seem so very sty
you want international recognition
a home project of nuclear fission
but we only make paper planes
and watch a lot of movies
can’t we call them ECs
we seem to have no chance
so why are we applying
and trying to convince you
that we are a special few
well its because we have a dream
a dream…
oh wait i m just letting off steam
so i should better shut up
and start working on my next f up
the common app essay :D

That’s exactly the same case with me. I try to keep my essays succinct, however, fail miserably at it. Too much to blab. Thanks for the great advice. I shall keep in mind the Disney story thing when I sit down to write my next essay.

Living in a poor and underdeveloped city for two years has certainly added an experience to it. I think I’ll continue with writing about it… :)

Nice poem Karan, if it is supposed to be one :)

Tennis and D&D, I am not sure how this started, but please let’s not mar the good mood by such posts.

And D&D. Yes, I am a firm believer in that reservation is necessary in institutes of higher education. And no, I am not a SC/ST or OBC. I have experienced first hand the pathetic and deplorable standard of living of the Indian poor in rural areas - can’t say so much about the urban poor. It doesn’t really compare when you pay 11,000 ruppes a month and someone else pays 20 rupees a month in a public school in Haryana. I know we can go on and on but it’s a discussion for another time :)

Your breakfast…? What exactly do you say? If I wrote about breakfast, it would be like: “I don’t like cereal and I don’t like Indian breakfast. So I just skip it. Yum.” BOOM (: That would get me into Yale. For sure.

Wow! Breakfast?! That’s such an original topic! I wonder what you wrote on it :D

And really tennis? Indian guys, syh?
What about me? o___O

PS. Karan. I just realized how my statement can be mistaken for mocking derision. But believe me, I meant it without a hint of sarcasm. I find your topic really interesting :)

Okay… if the first sentence was enough, why exactly did you go as far as to say you were trying to learn from the flamewar? I don’t understand you. At all.

I read two essays on breakfast on essayforum.com. They both were really good. And the girl who wrote it, actually got in through Yale! haha
okay, well Ban your account then! :P

Tizil7: Thanks for the comment. I really don’t know what it is.
About reservation, shouldn’t it be based on economic status rather than caste. Not all SCs/STs/OBCs are poor and not all poor are SCs/STs/OBCs so the benefits should be given to those who need it ie. the poor people.
And answer my question about the essay topic.

EDIT: i saw that it has already been answered

I’m sorry, Tilzil (I find this so awkward. I don’t like not addressing people by their names.). You’re cool (: It sucks cause all the Indian guys I know are SO PATHEITC. It’s like they took the worst 15 year old guys from India and shipped them over here. They tarnish my view of the Indian male population. But the Indian girls in America? We’re the best of the best (; haha.

its about how the breakfast that i have on a day influences the decisions that i make in the day. i know it sounds silly but it really happens. you don’t know how different your day is going to be when you eat cereal instead of aloo ke paronthe (rotis stuffed with potatoes and spices)
