Thanks again, Tizil
You sure about the abbrs, though?

Also, if you won an essay prize, what do you put in âhrs/weekâ and âwks/yrâ? Leave it blank?
Sorry to KEEP on bugging you!

Well, I wouldnât suggest writing most words in abbreviations, but things like International Maths Olympiad can be reduced to IMO.

For the Essay, you should put that in the achievements section rather than the activities section.

@noragon- i think ill be applying. and yes, their prompts are very interesting but i tend to just end up thinking about them and coming up with various ideas that i cant decide on
its hard for me to get around to actually putting pen to paper

@tizil- theres no seperate achievements section is there? theres just activitiesâŠ

Thanks again ![]()
Im getting all confused about what goes in activities and what in acheivements. Btw, can they overlap? Shouldnât , right? :O

@shreya- theres âhonorsâ in the academics section. i suppose it goes in there.

Wish there was a common thread for the whole of CC. i would post a HUUGE âthank you , i love you guysâ up there ![]()
Applies to all of you too <3 :)

@Cobalt : See if this helps. On the âActivitiesâ you should only write what youâve been doing outside school continuously and over a period of time. Any achievements in such activities need to be mentioned in the description below using common abbreviations and 100 char limit (I am not sure about the exact limit)
In the âAcademicsâ section, there is a honors section where you need to write about any prizes(academic) which youâve won or any rewards received, grade you won it in and its involvement level (local, state, national, international)
For any other activity you might have which doesnât fall into any of the above categories, there is a special âAdditional Informationâ area in the âWritingâ section. You can mention it there. Also pertaining to activities is a short (1000 char) essay in the writing section where you need to elaborate about any one of your previously mentioned activities. I think that covers almost everything about activities on the commonapp.

@iamthebist: the question was that there are two functions f(x) and g(x). Which of the following can be used to solve solutions of f(x)=g(x)
I- Plot f(x) and g(x) and find the x-coordinates of intersection points.
II- Plot f(x) and g(x) and find the y-coordinates of intersection points.
III- Plot h(x)=g(x)-f(x) and find x-coordinate of h(x)=0
Although II can be used but I thought it was too indirect. Solutions of both I and III are the answers so they are direct.

Just starting out with the college essays. Very vague prompts⊠kinda confusing. :-|

How many colleges are you guys applying to? how many is too many? and dyu think colls can see where else youve applied? theres a lot of debate on this but no one seems sureâŠ

^^ 10-12
I donât think colleges are able to see where else weâve applied. But like you said, I am not sure.

Oh.Im looking at around 15âŠ
what are some really good safety schools? ie places im likely to get into mainly due to a good sat score, and also likely to get merit based aid at? preferably on the east coastâŠ
anyone?

Im going for 8.
I dont really know about that, Shreya. Im looking purely at need-blind colleges. Sorry for not being more helpful :(

Thanks Karan, that cleared a lot up :)

General comment- I STILL havent filled the common app thingy up. Cant help procrastinating, its SO annoying :/

@Shreya: I am also looking for some safeties with merit based aid. But they are very hard to come by. The usual merit based aid is very less in most places. Iâll PM you if I find something.
@Cobalt: Well,I am putting off my essays. Also are you filling any credit values of the subjects? My school doesnât have anything like credits.

No, thats alright ![]()
but the reason youre applying to 8 is that theyre the only ones youre interested in, right? not cuz you think itll be detrimental to apply to more

karan- id like that, thanks ![]()
and no, i dont think were expected to fill in credit valuesâŠis your school an international one?

@Shreya and Karan- yup on need to fill the credits, or the AP section, coz we dont have that in most Indian schools; atleast not in govt schools ![]()
And yea, im not interested in applying to more; not for the hurting-chances reason. Al 8 are need blind, so thats good.
I gotta fill in the academics section onwardsâŠi got confused about where to put which acheivements/acivities
but now its somewhat clear, thanks to Tizil and the Common App thread.

Whew. I hope all this pays off and we get in
:O

Also, any clue how much leaving 2 qs, getting ~5 wrong on the Lit and Chem sub tests translates to out of 800?
Just wondering.

@Shreya- Nope,so Iâll just leave it blank. How many colleges have decided upon yet? Which ones?

oops too many typos ![]()
*no need
*All 8
*thread :D
