does anyone here know whether toefl is neccessary? all the sources i have enquired have told me TOEFL is very important. Ok some universitities do waive the requirement, but for visa it is compulsory.

The best answer you'll get, (the only one you should trust), is if you contact the local american embassy/consulate. They'll give you the most accurate response.

Yeah, Many of my friends too have told me that that TOEFL is necessary for VISAs but i don't buy it. At least For American visa's they aren't needed, plus I don't see any point in giving TOEFL/IELTS. Almost all of the colleges waive the English requirement for Indians.

happy pre-diwali!! :)

hahaah man.. whoever told you that toefl is compulsory for ur visa is joking.. coz its not..
there is no compulsion of any standardised test for visa till you can prove your english proficiency by other means

Since u will have the sat scores and also the waiver for toefl from universities, you dont need to have toefl scores at all..

As of the authenticity of this information , well it comes straight from my talk with the US Immigration and Visa Officer East India last year.
