The Indian Thread (TiT) # 15

ahhh, cool! Hi, Im an Indian living in Hong Kong with an American passport! (really complicated life)

sucks about the Stanford rejection, my brother is there right now and says its an amazing place, hopefully you'll make it there for graduate?

Hey if you have msn? PM me your email!
allright best of luck with those apps!

oh and btw I study under the British cirriculum!

I'm in India. Thanks for the welcome.

cool dude! where you applying to? ( I heard applying from India is an unpleasant experience, is this true?)

it is unpleasant in what ways?

as in teachers dont write recommendations on time, transcripts arent signed properly and stuff?

I wouldn't say that (although I can't speak from first hand experience) I'd say that the school may be less familiar with US admissions, also the applicant pool's very competitive. I'm right in guessing that you're evaluated as a US applicant?

@ dda -- yep, lol! I had the refuse-to-attest- transcript problem.

Well...to tell u very frankly....u hav to do everything(and I seriously mean this)......u will hav to tell right in advance wat they r actually supposed to do in the form..

Same in bangladesh, you have to play a very active role in the entire process. The flip side is that you have control over the process and can make sure that no silly mistakes are made (e.g. envelopes sent to the wrong address, not all required forms sent etc.)

My high school is incredibly inefficient with transcripts and school forms -- I gave them the materials in early October, and some stuff still hasn't been sent out. (They sent Stanford's form on December 14 for a December 15 deadline. It's scary.) So yeah, applying from India is singularly painful.

(Also, hi. British citizen living in India, here. :D)

Welcome to CC! be warned, 'tis addictive :)

Is anyone else experiencing problems with the CommonApp site?

no, what happened?

I don't know, I wasn't being able to access it. Had something to do with my local proxy. I re-routed my connection through a virtual proxy and everything worked just fine. For now its ok. :)

vamipro is right about the visa question.. and well as for the accuracy of his answer hehehe . .. i must tell you he did more research on visa process than any of you could even think of.. and ofcourse he is in states now..:)

SM

I agree, applying from India is very very painful, I'm sending everything out myself, not letting them send it.

Well whatever problem there may have been seems to have worn off, the local proxy's working...

How is that allowed? i mean you cant send it youself can you?the recs are supposed to highly confidential right? and none is suposed read it. oh well i had a tought time finshing my app too,but i had really cooperaive teachers, some even told me what they put on the rec.one way of making it look highy confidential is by asking your teacher to sign acoss the envolope and put the school seal on it.and then ask your teacher to send it..that way there can be no doubt ,whasoever, but i guess most intnl students do get to read their recs before they are sent out.correct me if i am wrong

It doesn't say anywhere that you aren't supposed to read them. Also, Harvard has a set of labels for its application packet available for download online, and it includes "Teacher Evaluation" labels. So.. I think it's okay.
