Well the practice for us is that the school seals the envelopes officially, the counselor signs across the seal, and it's given to us, so there's no real manner in which a student can tamper with a rec.

My school does exactly what k_twin's does. Teachers and counselor sign across the seal of the envelope.

Chan wrote, "Hello. I'm an international applicant and every piece of my application filled by other parties has passed through my hands - in fact, I've been consulted on the content of some. I know specifically that my integrity has been highly rated on all of those forms ... but has my ability to inspect these documents infringed on that integrity? One teacher even emailed me the form to print out... PS: I didn't ask to see the forms. I'll be mailing them all on Friday, as a convenience to the people who filled the forms; they trust me a lot. Is an extra recommendation from a less friendly source advised? [I already asked for it. Do you accept e-mailed recommendations?]"

We know that sometimes students see their recommendations before they are sent in. It's not our preference, but we know it happens. Chan, I can tell by the way you write this that you are a person of integrity. Thank you for being upfront and honest. There's no need to get a "less friendly" recommendation to balance "friendly" ones. In general, we do not accept email recommendations, but if a supplemental recommendation were emailed to us with all of your information, we would add it to your file.

Interesting post by Matt McGann, Admissions officer at MIT coincidentally on this same topic. Thought it'd be worth a read.

OOHS, Al Warqa'a. Why?

Ah. I'm at DC

Anyone still got apps to submit?

Dude i have 10 apps to submit till 1 Jan.

why dont we stard groups in our respective cities where all can meet and discuss their essays, college options, help each other with SAT toefl and stuff?

I've submitted CommonApp to all. I've still not sent supplements of 3-4 universitites. I just feel I can make the essays better somehow. But I'm not making any progress :(

I blame it on the Holiday season. ;)

hey guys! sorry I couldnt reply to your posts, I live in Hong Kong and the internet was down for a couple of days due to the Taiwan earthquake!

I still have to finish one essay for Princeton, and write about my intended major for MIT. Yeah, I've been slacking. (I blame the fact that I have exams from Jan 2. Hey, it's a good excuse!)

Ah, I can empathize, Lakshya, that's the reason I put off my own submission for so long; I'd suggest you submit soon though, sites tend to get cranky near the deadlines, the MIT application was moving at a sluggish pace when I submitted a few days back.

Anyway, I'm glad to announce that I'm done with the application process except for mid-year reports, everything else's been sent! :)

I finished and submitted all my apps on the 17th. Just waiting for the acceptances/rejections...
