The insomniacs thread- chat here when you are up in the middle of the night!

I know the worse thing to do is get on my iPad with the screen. Reading a book helps to get sleepy again, but I’m addicted to my iPad and don’t have a good book lying around. The only good thing is I’m retired so it doesn’t really matter that I’m up. I don’t know why that bothers me so much. I’m just getting to live life longer! Haha

Not all that late here (a bit after midnight) - I ought to be getting in bed and reading myself to sleep. All sorts of health issues that can be helped with more sleep! But instead I’m researching eye makeup for seniors, as if I don’t have an entire drawerful. Then I have to try to get comfortable, with both extra pillows to keep myself on my back while my surgery swelling continues to decrease, and keep my legs elevated since my ankles have decided to swell in sympathy with my eyelids and forehead. Or maybe because my blood pressure is up…

What is waking me before 7:00 most days? (Not husband snoring since I sleep in another room per other thread.) Dry mouth from Invisalign retainers? Birds chirping/squawking and planes starting to take off at 6:30? Pipes from sprinkler system three days a week? Hunger because I’m trying not to eat much late in the evening? Aches and pains in various places? And of course bathroom - I once read that when you wake, there’s a signal to release a chemical that triggers the urge. Occasionally I’ll sleep until 8:00-ish and very rarely until 9:00.

OK, off to the bedroom…

Do you have Nightshift on on your iPad? It emits warm colors instead of the blue light that can keep you awake. I have it scheduled for the warmest it goes from 10 pm to 7 am. Also, I have my phone set so that three clicking the home button makes it dimmer than dim. (Dimmer than the settings allow.)

I read on my kindle for iPhone a lot. Will probably do that soon. Best wishes to all insomniacs!

I have an older iPad, but I’ll check that out! Who knew?

I find it just so odd that I fall asleep really fast, then stay asleep…then bing…I’m awake.

Machine embroidered the atarah and corners, stripes are done, but I need to finish sewing them on to the wool and then will quilt the stripe panel. Am testing out buttonholes measurements for the tzitzit, which I’ll do in the am.

My tallit is crazy quilted, almost all hand-stitched and beaded. Did it in 2005, added more in 2017, really need to finish it and reassemble.

Cool that your friend does Judaism art, too!

That sounds beautiful and unique! Post a photo, if you like. Yes, my friend made tallitot for the school production of Fiddler, although not like the one you’re making, obviously!

Time to try sleep again! :crossed_fingers:t3:

Good morning….it’s 5:14

2:27 am. Working on tallit, glad to have had a four-overtime NHL playoff game to keep me amused. Hope to be in bed in about 45 minutes.

I have an OLD iPad. I was up last night at 1:41 am but couldn’t respond because my iPad “no longer supports a number of sites”. Downloading new browsers doesn’t happen on that old thing.

I also had kids that had to be at swim practice at 5 am. When they dropped swim, I just couldn’t go back to sleep, and the killer was, since I had to be at my schools or hospitals at 7 am, I couldn’t sleep.
It’s a bummer staying up til 1 am typing reports and having to get up at 5.
I’m trying to reset my internal clock but still can’t seem to sleep more than 4 or 5 hours a night.

Good morning. It’s 4:19. I’ve had my phone on the nighttime setting but didn’t have the color set for the right color, so thanks for the tip.

4:30am here. I’ve gone to sleep at 12:30 the past two nights- early for me - hoping to sleep 6-7 hours.

The first night I made it to 6am. Right now- I remembered this thread was here and couldn’t resist seeing if I was the only one up. Lol!

Now I’ll read for a bit and hopefully nod off soon.

Was up at 6, tried going back to sleep and had the most peculiar stress dream. Ans I remember the whacky details. Even Tom Hanks made a cameo appearance in my dream!

I was up briefly at 4 to hit the little girl’s room, then back to sleep. My watch tells me I consistently get about 7 hrs of sleep. Maybe thats all I need.

I slept through, 12-5. That is the best kind of night I ever get: 5 hours with not waking up. I feel okay but would love that luxurious feeling of sleeping in!

@jym626 7 hours sounds good, however you get it!!

Actually I just re-checked. It says I averaged 6 hrs 34 minutes this past week. If I look at the past 6 mos it says I averaged 7 hrs 38 min. But I don’t see a single night where I didn’t wake up :frowning:

That sounds like a great program @momofboiler1. When I get up at 3:30 or so to pee, I try not to turn the light on in the bathroom and just crawl back to bed. No smartwatch! No phone! Nothing online! I could post some breathing exercises that help me when I feel too awake to go back to sleep. Or count backward from 100.

@jym626 I realized a while ago that when I have stress/anxiety dreams, it means that I have to pee. I stopped trying to figure them out; I just go to the bathroom and enjoy the relief on my bladder when I lie down again.

Maybe better off with a Kindle which has limited capablities, much less temptation than an ipad or iphone or any phone. I take out my kindle, turn off the light, and read until I feel sleepy. It’s usually not more than 15 minutes.

Just got home from the ER. Too wired to sleep. Sewing machine needle went through my finger and broke off. ER couldn’t extract it, so will have to call a hand surgeon on Monday.

But the tallit is done!

Up at 3. I’m so sorry that happened! The same thing happened to my alterations lady and she had to have surgery. You poor thing, I cringe thinking about it.

It seems I’m getting 6-7 hours a night, but that’s just not enough. I think part of the problem is my exercise routine has been pretty sketchy, so I’m going to try to make a better effort.
