I have a wedding coming up. Itā€™s a two day event. The dress code for one is dressy casual and the other festive. The bride referenced two articles for the dress code.

This is dressy casual

This is festive

For the life of me I canā€™t see the difference. Or what age 60+ people are supposed to wear

Iā€™ll have to attend both events, as itā€™s a relative. My kid is hoping that they can opt for one of the two events.

One is a dinner and the next day is a boat cruise. Late September in the Midwest. Could be 80, could be 60.

Talking to the mother of the bride is not an option. Many reasons that I wonā€™t get into.

Interesting. Both could fit for sonā€™s Garden Semi-Formal recommendations (which encouraged brights, florals ā€¦and practical shoes for the outdoor park venue).

In my mind it netted out to this quote from first article - ā€œ Itā€™s a way to describe an overall aesthetic that is basically not-all-the-way-formal-but-please-donā€™t-wear-jean-shorts.ā€. Well, actually was thinking no jeans, no shorts.

Festive attireā€¦means have some fun with what you wearā€¦but keep it dressy. So no dowdy thingsā€¦get some great colors happening! It sounds like fun to me!

I would thonk festive might mean ā€œavoid darkā€ in favor of fun and cheery. But my interpretation might be wrong and exactly why this is confusing!

I donā€™t think it is ā€œavoid darkā€ but rather it is ā€œavoid very formal wear if possible.ā€
This is dark but qualifies as festive IMO!

I actual consider that color! But not black or navy. But maybe because I consider those more formal?

Black or navy might work just fine if the dress doesnā€™t look like it belongs in the formal wear section of a department store IMO.

Iā€™d stay out of the mother of the bride section of any bridal shop too. And no beige. I think a fun fabric is what is called for hereā€¦so have some fun.

@deb922 why would this be a problem for someone 60 or older?

Hereā€™s what Shiv wore to Connorā€™s boat wedding :

Not festive! But of course her father had just diedā€¦

Edit to add - for a boat cruise, as with a beach event, donā€™t wear something with loose flowing material that could fly up in a breeze.

Iā€™d likely go with something colorful and lightā€”either a top and nice slacks or a knee length dress. Those are the outfits I invariably prefer for most events.
