I couldn't find anything on CC about the New School. I know it's not a highly ranked college for economy, but it's an option for me (applying for Fall 2012). Does anyone go there and, maybe, studies economy? I would love to hear what the students have to say and suggest. Thank you!

Here’s what I’ve heard and read. First off, it’s a bunch of little schools inside a big one. Parsons, the New School of Music, and Eugene Lang. I don’t know much about anything besides Eugene Lang. Eugene Lang is a sort of progressive/alternative liberal arts college that doesn’t have traditional majors. Think Hampshire or Sarah Lawrence academics. They have seminars as opposed to lectures. This is a school where you’ll find lots of kids who are hipsters and who were the “freaks” in high school, for lack of a better word. I would have applied, but was a kicker for me. Like NYU, it doesn’t have a central campus, so the social scene is pretty bad. They say that the whole city is your social life. Maybe that’s okay for social butterflies who can easily find friends anywhere, but for socially awkward people like me, it’s not. My tour guide implied that they were in a sort of competition with NYU for students and who has better academics. Someone also told me that many kids transfer out, which is the reason for the low graduation-in-six-years rate. Check it out, because there are many pros and cons. Thei website lists all the admissions details. Lastly, although NYU and the New School probably have some of the worst social scenes for city schools, other city colleges have the same problem because of a lack of a central campus.

This schools seems risky. I want an urban school, but it’s just so small and there is no social scene. How is he foreign language program? I am looking international relations/foreign language…and advice?
