The Official 2010 UC to UC Transfer Thread

As far as I know, senior transfers are not allowed. Look up the unit maximums on the schools you want to apply to…that should tell all.

actually i’ve been in contact with a uci counselor via email. There is a limit as to how many one is allowed to have before transfer (120 or something), but I was just curious to know if anyone here actually has gone through the process as it is not normal.

So, have you guys finished writing your essays? Did you decide to include reasons for transferring in the essay or no? I don’t think I’m going to, it feels forced…

yo?? 10char!!

I’m currently at UCD as a sophomore with a 3.2 in Poli Sci. Would it just be a completely bad idea for me to apply for UCLA? Also, I believe my friend at UCSB has less than a 3.0, does he have a chance at getting into UCD?

Side note: We aren’t stupid, college is hard! Haha…

Well, it’s not a completely bad idea, in the sense that you will be in no worse position after applying!

Less than 2 weeks! How is everyone feeling about their chances?

My essay still sucks! So if that doesn’t get better, I’m not feeling so hot.

Well I am feeling okay about my essays. Not great not bad. They have been entirely restructured about three of four times over the past three months. i went from talking a lot about my high school life up to college, to talking more about why I want to transfer, and now I am mostly focusing on my involvement in college extracurricular activities and only have a brief 1-2 sentences about why I want to transfer. Who knows, maybe it will change again!

My current incarnations don’t actually even mention my reasons for transfer.

Yeah, I can’t imagine that they would put much weight on transfer reasons. Like I brought up in another post, unless you have an amazing reason such as a dying lonely mother, there really is no reason to make a big deal over it. Coming from a third Tier UC should be an indicator that you are ready to move up to a University with more resources and the better program.

I just applied to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for some reason. The application was free, and it didn’t require an essay, so I did it, haha. Hell, the application hardly required anything…not even a listing of previous courses taken in college, just a very generalized thing. Very strange.

I’d like to hear from more people about this…are you guys including your reasons for transfer in the essays?

Haha I was joking with my girlfriend that I would apply to SLO for *****s and giggles. I can’t imagine why anyone would go to a CSU over a UC :)

If you were to put a reason, Arcade, what would you say?

Well, I’m a computer science major so SLO is actually considerably stronger than UCR for the subject. Actually, SLO’s stronger than some of the mid-tier UC’s for my subject, from what I’ve been hearing!

Reason for transferring? I don’t know, that’s a toughie. The truth of the matter is I would just way rather go to the school’s I’m applying to than stay in Riverside. I could put something about “course rigor” but that’s not really true…I’ve had plenty of very tough courses here. Maybe it’s best to just not mention my reasons. I mean, Berkeley in particular has a specific program I’m interested in, but I don’t want to write about that since I’m applying to UCLA as well.

I know what you mean. I honestly don’t think the essay plays a very important part. It is mostly ignorant College Confidential posters who claim that reason to transfer means everything. Your reasoning is similar to mine and I am definitely not making a big deal about it in my essays, since that is everyone’s reason.

Even if SLO has good programs, which I guess it does, I would still rather graduate from a UC and get a UC education. They have budget cuts just like us, only the CSUs are hurting more and I can imagine a lot of programs are getting cut there as well.

Well I’m not with you on that man. San Luis Obispo’s a gorgeous city, from what I hear, far superior to Riverside. It’s also more “prestigious” or respected or whatever, from my experience. It’s also harder to get into as a freshman, so I know the kids would be smart. I mean, I can’t say for sure I would transfer there rather than stay at UCR, but I’m leaving it as a back up plan. If I get in anywhere else, I’ll probably go to the “anywhere else,” haha.

Here’s the stats on admitted students at Cal Poly vs. some other UC’s.

UCR:
Average SAT (math + reading): about 1120
High school GPA: 3.59

UCSB:
Average SAT (m + r): 1247
High school GPA: 4.03

UCI:
Average SAT (m + r): 1244
High school GPA: 4.01

Cal Poly:
Average SAT (m + r): 1276
High school GPA: 3.89

This thread needs to stop dying!

There aren’t that many UC-UC transfers

I understand that SLO is relatively hard to get into, but that doesn’t make my statements untrue or change my opinion about the school. CSUs are getting hit hard with the budget cuts, arguably harder than the UCs since UCs in get all the funding for research and whatnot. It is not like SLO is that much more prestigious than any one UC. It sounds like you believe their programs are better, which would be a good reason to transfer, but I wouldn’t transfer because of any prestige value.

Besides, with your GPA, you should have no problem getting into another UC, which I think would be a much better move.

Well to be honest, I just have been reading up on the city of SLO and it looks beautiful. Coming from such a crappy city that I’m in right now, one of my main selection criteria is the quality of the location. But we’ll see what happens…
