The Official 2010 UC to UC Transfer Thread

I think UCLA is pretty strict about pre-requisites, but I’m not sure to what extent. For my major, in the college of engineering, they say that missing even 1 pre-req means you probably won’t get accepted. They’re probably more lenient towards other majors though. If you’re just missing one class, you’re probably ok.

EDIT: Wait, you’re applying after only one quarter of classes? How do you have enough units? AP classes? You need to be in junior standing at the time of enrollment.

Yeah I’ll have junior standing by the end of spring. 44 AP units and 53 units from classes throughout the year. I’m not really sure what to expect, the prereq’s UCLA lists are as follows:

“To be considered for admission the following pattern of core courses must be completed by the spring before transfer:
* one year of biology with lab for the major
* one year of calculus
* one year of general chemistry with lab for the major
* one semester in organic chemistry with lab
Strongly Recommended
* a second semester of organic chemistry
* one year of calculus-based physics”

I think I fulfilled the year of bio…UCI has us taking two quarters of bio freshman year, but no labs.

The year of calculus I think is covered by AP units? I got a 5 on the AP Calc BC test. Idk, I’m not sure, for UCI bio majors, I have credit for all the calc that’s needed.

I’m good for the general chem.

The only problem is the organic chemistry, which is supposed to be taken sophomore year, at both UCI and UCLA. Will they understand that I don’t have a chance to take the class but I’ll still be on track to graduate?

YES I got two A’s and two A+‘s. So, I’ll have all of UCLA’s pre-requisites done and have a 3.96. UCLA better frickin’ accept me!! Woo!

Man, looking back on my application…it could have been much better. When I applied to some private schools after the UC one was due, I realized so many more things I could put in the extra-curricular section that made the application much better. As it is, I only have two (not overly impressive) extra-curriculars listed on the UC application. Ah well, can’t go back in time.

Hey, do you guys know about the Cal Grant form? This last year at UCR I didn’t have to explicitly apply for it yet it’s still in my financial aid package. I’m assuming that UCR just uploads my GPA info and thus I get the award since I qualify. Do I have to actually apply for this for the transfer UC’s? Does anyone know how this works?

hi. i have a couple questions about transferring
currently i am a freshmen at uc san diego looking to transfer to berkeley or la for computer science
i have:
36 ap units
27 cc units
28 sd units by the end of this quarter
that puts me at 91 units at the end of this quarter. i think by the end of next year, i will have way over the maximum 120 units to transfer. will this be ok? 63 of my college units were taken before i even got into ucsd.

also, do they mainly look at your major gpa, or gpa overall?
because in my first quarter, i had a 3.18 overall, but if it werent for writing (i got a C+), i would have a 3.77, and i think the same thing is going to happen this quarter too (ill have a 3.8-4.0 without writing and a 3.4 or so if writing is included)

Hi. i also have a few questions regarding transferring from uc to uc. i am currently a sophomore undergrad at uc davis and am looking to possibly transfer to uc berkeley. i have already completed 90 units and have finished the uc general education requirements. in addition, i have almost completed a minor in german language (will be completed by the end of spring quarter) and would look to transfer such credits towards a minor in german at berkeley.

basically, my issue is that i am no longer happy with davis and am thinking that berkeley will be better. i was accepted into berkeley for freshman admission, but ultimately turned it down and decided to go to davis instead. i loved davis my freshman year, but this year i haven’t been enjoying davis. i just feel like i’ve already experienced so much here and am looking for something new. plus, berkeley is so much more respected than davis is and i am beginning to feel the burden of going to a school that is in berkeley’s shadow. i do regret my previous decision of turning down admission to berkeley and was hoping to redeem myself. i am just curious about the transfer process. i realize that it is too late to apply for fall 2010 admission, but would consider applying for fall 2011 admission. does berkeley accept transfer students for spring semester 2011 admission? anyways, just thinking out loud and hoping to gain some insight into the transfer process.

btw,
-my gpa here is 3.39
-i am working towards a major in communications (and would continue to do so at berkeley) and i will have already completed the lower division requirements for this major by the end of spring quarter in davis
-i have a prestigious volunteer position for ucd’s picnic day (the largest student run event in the nation)
-i have many awards and extra-curricular activities from high school as well as job experience from a job that i was laid off from at the end of my freshman year of davis
-and i also have been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Lupus and deal with its burden daily in addition to achieving academically

anyways, all of my previous accomplishments and personal statements were good enough to get into berkeley the first time around, so i am just wondering how that would affect my chances of gaining acceptance as a transfer student. does it help or hurt that i turned down berkeley before and now regret my decision?

if anyone can provide me with any insight/advice regarding the transfer process and my particular circumstances that would be much appreciated. i am feeling kinda lost and down, so anything helps. thanks!

Hey lois! Welcome to the site.

Alright, here’s the thing about transferring. It’ll be really hard to get into Berkeley Communications major (media studies?) from a UC. Generally a 3.39 is a good GPA, but for Berkeley that is a bit low. I would honestly recommend, if you’re very serious about leaving Davis, leaving after this semester and joining a community college where you’ll have a stronger chance of admittance. CCC’s are preferred over UC’s for transfer students. You could take CC classes over summer and finish up any necessary lower-division major requirements. Then in fall 2010, you could apply to Berkeley with a little higher GPA and from a community college.

You sound like a really studious and intelligent person, so I definitely think you could do it. Your best course of action would be getting straight A’s this semester if possible, and the getting A’s at a community college over summer, and then again in the fall. Maybe work a part-time job or do some EC’s, and then apply to Berkeley in November. With your EC’s, awards, and writing ability, I have no doubt that you could very well be accepted.

Berkeley won’t penalize you for turning them down your freshman year. The UC’s know that people will often turn down a more prestigious option because the cost may be burdensome. That may not be your case, but you will not be penalized for turning UCB down.

Berkeley also does not accept students for spring semester 2011 semester unless you’re a fall 2010 freshman or transfer and get accepted into the “FPF program”…which is basically a deferral for a semester, but you can still take classes at UCB in the FPF program until the spring. Essentially, there’s no legitimate spring admissions or winter transfer system. Transfer students begin in the fall semesters. Thus, you would have to apply in November 2010 for the fall 2011 year as an incoming junior.

Ok now I have a few questions lol. I’m about to transfer to a UC this fall, and I’m wondering why you are leaving Davis? Berkeley and Davis are my top two choices, and I love both schools. I’m just curious, but what specific things about Davis do you dislike? What things do you find more appealing about Berkeley? What are the best and worst things about Davis in your opinion?

Again, I’m just wondering because I’m heavily considering both schools. Let me know what you think! I hope to see you someday at one of these universities! Thanks.

I may be wrong on this, but I’m somewhat sure you need to have your latest 30 (semester) units from a ccc to qualify for the priority, and she already has 90 quarter units done.
I strongly doubt they would care, or know for that matter, that you turned down Berkeley as a freshman.
Also another question for you, did you already turn in an application (as you would be going to berkeley in fall)? If not there is a unit cap on uc-uc transfer students.

Berkeley’s policy on that “A student who has accumulated more than 80 transferable semester units from a four-year institution is considered to have excess units and will not be admitted” So if you are staying make sure you stay under that limit.

Have you by any chance heard about/considered the uc visitor program?

In the case that you didnt get in it would allow you an opportunity to spend a semester studying at Berkeley.

oops, idk why that posted twice.

Hey corinnejay, thanks for that info on the UC visiting students idea! I had no idea that was possible or an option! That seems really interesting, and something I’ll almost definitely end up doing. Thanks for opening up a new door so to speak :).

That visiting students stuff does sound like a lot of fun. Though studying abroad sounds even more fun. I wonder if us transfers would even have the opportunity to study abroad…anyone know about that?

Check [University of California Education Abroad Program](http://eap.ucop.edu/) for studying abroad.

who says you cant do both? If you’re bored of your college, that kills a whole year while still letting you get the college experience.

I’m actually in that boat right now. I’m currently attending a mid-tier UC and just got accepted into the JPIS Fudan Program in Shanghai, China next fall. However, in November I decided to apply as a transfer student to UC Berkeley because I’ve always wanted to go there. So If I get into Berkeley, I would go there. But if I don’t get in I’m going to Shanghai!

But now that I’m thinking about it… if I get into Berkeley could I still go to China because it’s the same UC EAP program?

On another note, loislane21 I’m also applying as a media studies major at UCB. I hear that the media studies program is very impacted… so I’m not sure how good of a chance I have. Right now I have a 3.58 gpa, received 3 internships (one at ABC news station), swim instructor, community service and officer of the communication association. If someone could chance me and answer my eap questions that would be great! Thanks :)

@ hoping4luck: You’re in a pretty cool situation. I mean Berkeley or Shanghai?!?! That’s awesome.

UCB Media Studies is heavily impacted, so a 3.58 is low for that major. However, you seem to have amazing internships and are officer of the comm. association. I would say you have a solid shot, but that GPA could hurt you. Well, I mean obviously it’s a great GPA, don’t get me wrong, but for Media Studies at UCB it’s below average. Hope for the best, but I’d say you’re a bit of a reach.

I can’t answer your EAP question, but I would assume that would be the case lol. Best of luck!

If you fulfill the requirements for the EAP program for the university in China, you should be able to go. I’m not really sure about your current situation, but if you are currently at a UC then you can just ask your EAP coordinators/advisors there as most of the UC study abroad programs are the same (I still get study abroad brochures from Davis even though I attend UCSC).

I wonder if they’re going to ask us for winter updates if we’re taking a bunch of pre-requisites right now.

Thanks for the replies! I’m definitely going to talk to the EAP officer.

@arcadefire1027 - I’m pretty sure they only want our UC grades up until fall quarter.
