The Official Chances Thread!

whats the average SAT score for berkeley engineering?

high .

2005 - <a href="http://www.coe.berkeley.edu/labnotes/0905/dean.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.coe.berkeley.edu/labnotes/0905/dean.html</a></p>

"Speaking of our Engineering students, I'm happy to report that this year we admitted almost 600 freshmen to the College -- the largest freshman class since 1988 -- and one that certainly continues Berkeley 's tradition of excellence. Our freshmen have an average GPA of 4.35 and average SAT score of over 1400."

where's v-dawg?

i have almost the same stats as stupidkid...

Although my extracurriculars are on the weak side: only a few clubs. I am, however, a CA resident (ELC).

unweighted 4.0
My capped UC-GPA is 4.4.. (10-11)
uncapped 4.9 (10-11)

What are my chances?

^^ Are you in-state? If so, then I'd say Berkeley's a match. If out-of-state, I'd say you have a good shot. The weak ECs might hurt your chances, though.

yes I'm instate. What exactly is a match? 50%?

match means ur most likely to get in unless cal nitpicks on something or you write terrible essays.

I think that's closer to a safety (many people confuse the definitions of the two).

A match is 60-70%. Safe match would be about 80%, and safety would be 90+%.

Nice Kyle...got to the 4000 post mark already :D

By the way guys, if you retook your SATs, there's no need to ask for chances again. I have a simple formula for you.

~50 point gain on SAT I: doesn't affect your chances.
~100-200 point gain on SAT I: added 5-10% to your chances
~50-100 point total gain on highest 2-3 SAT IIs: doesn't affect your chances
~100-200 point total gain on highest 2-3 SAT IIs: add 5% to your chances

Can someone chance me please?

What are a-g courses?

Obviously we are not Cal residents. Do the schools use this for OOS too? Do they do some correlation to decide if your class would be considered equivalent to an a-g?

In calculating GPA I keep seeing references to count the number of courses, but in my school a one semester course is only counted as .5 credit while a two semester course is counted as 1. (My one semester AP Economics course only counts as .5 in calculating gpa) Does California do the same.

Here's a brief overview of a-g courses:
<a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/subject_reqs.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/subject_reqs.html</a></p>

My guess is that courses that are similar (like your math, social science etc courses get counted towards your UC GPA. However, some courses, such as physical education and some other more "non-academic subjects" do not fall under the a-g requirements. I would suggest asking Berkeley for further clarification. :)

And for your GPA, I would just do it on a semester basis (assume a half credit is one credit etc...), but I'm not too sure of your situation with semester courses. :D
