The Official Chances Thread!

upenn4life: OOS is pretty hard/competitive anyways, even if you have excellent stats. If you applied to math major then you must be L&S, which is helping your chances (its the largest college). Being young for your grade doesn't matter...(I myself am younger). Hope your personal statement was good, because it can be what saves you. Good luck!98
slight reach

andr0128: Being related to a professor doesn't help @ berkeley I think. The average UCGPA of admitted students is 4.18, so you're maybe low average there but your test scores are good, so I'd say you're probably in, more likely if you feel strongly about your personal essay.
match

tyguy98: Stats probably too low for berkeley out of state. No idea though how they match up with the stats of the schools you want chancing.
reach for berkeley

leunglj: for berkeley, you're probably in. You have decent stats, good extra curricular and you're applying to L&S. As for stanford, northwestern, yale, upenn, and columbia: I'd say reach. #1, applications to the ivy's are a mixed bag, you never really can be certain. Also, I think that your SAT1 scores are kind of low, not bad by any standards, but to be competitive they probably should be at least 2100 (probably around 2200 though). And you don't want to have any weaknesses in your application like that history sat II when they're comparing you to students that took that, and more sat's and did better. :/ You've got good extra curriculars and volunteering though, so if you have an outstanding personal statement you could be in.
match for berkeley
reach for others

Could someone please chance me for UPenn, Stanford, MIT, and Yale as well?
Thanks

What do you think? Do I have a chance to get into Cal? My school does not offer ap courses at all until senior year but I noted that on app. My ecs (and recs if they took them) are about as strong as you can get.

Cal does not take recs, and to be honest your ecs are not "as strong as you can get". They're good, but not great--I know people who have had more and have been rejected although maybe you have more you didn't list. Considering you're OOS, your UC GPA should be about 4.12 or around there, so you are kind of low. Also, your SAT scores are good, but SAT II a little low. In case you calculated your UC GPA incorrectly here's how:
there are a few steps to calculating the UC gpa:

disregard freshman and senior year

take all the a-g courses you have and add them up with 4 being an A, 3 a B, 2 a C, 0 for D and F

add one point for each AP or UC-approved honors course up to 8 points

divide by the total number of classes you used to calculate your total

Overall, I'd say slight reach, basically because you are OOS. Consider, only 8% of the freshman class is OOS/international. You do have pretty good chances as you are applying to L&S, and I think the university is letting in slightly more non CA residents this year. Your chances improve if you've got a good essay.

i got a little confused about the GPAs coz my school doesn't calculate GPAs. for the unweighted/weighted GPA, do i calculate based on national exam or cumulative grades over grades 9-12?

thanks for clarifying/chancing! :D

SivRami - assuming you live in California, I'd say 50% chance.

mraoshi - 40%, a little higher for UCLA/USC/UCSD, much lower for Yale.

drpvv - take your SAT/SAT IIs and come back. If you get good scores on those you'll have a good chance.

GoHakers - good GPA, SATs are...meh. Pretty good ECs. 65% chance.

yeejietang - for your unweighted GPA, it's cumulative 10-11 grades I believe...international is tough, and I don't know if your GPA/SATs are high enough. Your TOEFL is pretty good. I'm gonna guess 25%. Good luck.

I realize my GPA and test scores are decidedly mid-range and I'm hoping some of my extracurriculars pick up the slack. Unfortunately, I don't know how much weight extracurriculars truly pull in the UC system, I'd appreciate any input on that. Thanks!

Good GPA, decent SAT scores (lol SAT II Chinese), way too many ECs...I'm gonna say, 70%.

chance for privates? Johns Hopkins, Stanford (I don't think I have enough ecs for stanford - you generally have to be pretty distinguished to get in)

Sorry for double post. Couldn't edit post.

My weighted GPA (10-11) counting all APs/Honors should be 4.46, not 4.5 sorry miscalculated.

Top 10% just based on decile rankings in terms of unweighted GPA, but I'm sure with weighted I'm a lot higher seeing as my course load is more rigorous then most of my peers.

Math SAT II is obviously IIC.

Another E.C. = Interschool tutoring program, it's a total of 3hours/week and did it for 3 semesters and I get volunteer hours for it. I get a grade for it (A) on my transcript but it's not calculated into GPA.

I'd like: Chances for UC Berkeley and other similars along with privates as listed above.

-that's all, thanks.

Hm, unless you have some sort of interesting personality characteristic or such, I get a bad feeling about Stanford. Berkeley, I would be floored and terribly surprised if you were not in. As you said, it's about numbers. Some students with much lower numbers than you have will get into Stanford...anyway, that's how it goes. Oh and you're in-state. Berkeley seems like a sure bet.

I don't know that Johns Hopkins is as unpredictable as Stanford though. Might be a surer shot there.

Hey,

I know that the admissions process is holistic, but for out-of-state, they weigh stats a bit more heavily than for other applicants. What average SAT (I/II) scores do you think would put out-of-state applicants in the ballpark? Thanks very much.
