I’m procrastinating so much on my essays, it’s not even funny. I haven’t written a single word yet and don’t have any idea what I should write about on my common app essay.

I’m applying to Cornell, Chicago and Vanderbilt as reaches, URochester, UVA and Boston as my low-reaches/matches and a couple of other safeties. Sometimes I feel that my list is a tad hopeful since my stats aren’t alright but nothing excellent, and I have a D in my O’ Levels (bc pak studies).

Anyway, what do you guys think of the “Main siraf harvard priceton yale stanford oxford cambridge apply kar raha hoon kion ke agar bahir jana hai to kisi achi uni main jana chahiye” mentality common among many students these days? It annoys the hell out of me.

Well that’s certainly possible. The fact that a person is a citizen only gives the person the advantage of a better financial aid package and need-blind admission in most cases.

Ahsan you raised a very pertinent point regarding Pakistani attitude towards US unis. The only university that is really known outside academic circles is Harvard, and possibly Yale. This ignorance is shown by many who are as yet unaccustomed to the idea of liberal arts education.
There are many domestic US students who have turned down Yale and Harvard to go into LACs like Williams and Amherst. That does not in any way mean that Yale and Harvard are not good enough. Frankly speaking they are amazing. But it does speak to the fact that there are some amazing universities that one may not see through ivy tinted glasses.
Also it applies a lot to your personal preferences. Maybe a certain LAC can provide a student with an atmosphere that no other university can. Or maybe Harvard can provide one with an atmosphere that would be provided by only a few other universities. It all depends on personal preference.

hello there talha, joiya remember me? It snowed here too, but i guess it was about time it did.

To all you 2014-ers, jot down Lafayette College on your lists. Hands out aid like candy and is one of the few colleges that actually care. They send you this personalized acceptance letter that makes you feel precious, plus the campus is stunning. This year they’re really banging on about diversity and getting even more international students so all of you have a really strong chance.

This thread makes me so feel so proud. Keep up the good work! If you have any questions, just shoot.

P.S: Please don’t bring in the LAS/Aitchison or My dad’s bigger than your dad discussion into this. Take a hint from the name of the website, keep it college related.

OK OK I have just been off for 24 hours n the thread is really beginning to get started :)(I am loving it guys!! keep it started) @ahsanxr
yes that sorta makes me jealous of you coz I liked cornell but m not applying coz they are really stingy to internationals but what can I say. Not my fault I am not a US citizen. @etchelion
Yes a while ago, I had this perception k HYP jana hai warna nahin jana. But after I saw the outrageous rejections at CC, I understood my “aukaat” n I guess along the way I have figured out that a LAC suits me much better n I have started to look up instead of down on LACs. @khan91
I would have never applied to ur school, had I not seen u on CC.I m applying there n lets hope for the best

Guys, go back to the thread from last year, and search for the various advices all of us put in. That stuff is gold. It’s in the last few pages (around april 2009) so shouldnt be difficult to find.

@Ecthelion: Yeah man. When I tell people over here about the places I’m applying to, they’ve only heard about maybe Cornell and most of the times give the reaction that I’m applying to sucky unis. I also agree with waji that a lot of people around here don’t know their “aukaat” Siraf O’ Level main straight A’s (which are a dime a dozen these days) ka yeh nahi matlab ke aap ka har jaga admission ho jaye ga.

@Samtjt: No, I took it in Noor Banquet Hall, and yes 2 subjects. Math II and Physics.

@khan91: Man Lafayette is one of my top choices. It seems like a really nice college. Can you tell us a bit more about it? How is the “fun” factor over there? The only thing that turns me off from it, a bit is that it’s a bit small (only 600 freshmen). BTW what were your scores etc?

Erm, a student body of 2500 students i feel is the right size. I mean it’s small enough to let you make a difference, but big enough so that it doesnt feel like some village school. Fun factor, hmm, depends on your definition of fun. But one thing i can tell you is that there;s something to do ALL the time. There wont be a second when you’re ‘just’ sitting there out of ideas about stuff to do. If you’re into parties, then this place is perfect for you. If you prefer relatively quiter gatherings (like me), then there’s a bunch of activities too.

Academics wise, the faculty is top notch. The classes are REALLY fun.

My scores, god i seriously dont want to do all the typing. They’re somewhere on the thread from last year. But as long as you’ve done decent you have a chance.

oh and a piece of advice for all you guys, definitely look into schools in other countries. The education in US is good, but the atmosphere and setting is not for all. So look to Hong Kong, Germany, Qatar etc when deciding on colleges to apply to.

Khan91, well it’s cool then. If I get accepted and get good financial aid, I’ll definitely be considering Lafayette. Do you think I can get admission. Wesey my superscored SAT is a 2050 (730 M 640 CR 690 M) but I only sent Lafayette my October scores which were 2010 (690 M). I also have good grades, except for a D in Pak Studies at O Levels. Also expecting a 750+ in Math II and maybe 680+ in Physics. Essays and recommendations will also be good.

Oh and it would be really awesome if some of you 2013ers could send your essays to me (if you still have em). I really need to get started on mine and need some motivation!
