Idk, I think 10 O level A’s and 4 AS level A’s has become kind of like a pre-requisite. JMO. It’s less of a boost and more of a cut-off. Past that, everything else is evaluated. I say this because almost everyone I know who’s applying has straight A’s so, I mean, there has to be another way to distinguish within the pool…? again, I’m just guessing lol.

also, most of ali moeen’s 23 subjects were just the same ones repeated in another board. and, call me dumb or whatever, i was just never impressed by that. i think getting finalist at intel sts etc is way more impressive, and hence a stronger tipping factor in college admissions.

yep straight A’s are getting way more common these days…

and for a UW 4.0 GPA you only need 8 O level A’s and 3 AS level A’s…

um, i don’t know how to do the GPA conversion. i was just giving those stats as an example.

so, we’re about half-way to decision week and, tbh, i’m already starting to panic. i really don’t want to go to michigan.

what about you guys?

so you already got into Michigan wow thats awesome ! … well I have no hopes like seriously my SAT Scores suck big time and after seeing so many incredible profiles here… you feel like you dont even stand a chance!

so I’m new around here, so as to speak. been sulking in the background really… anyway, a big hearty HEY to everyone out here B)
Because you all sound so “knowledgeable” and stuff… whats the deal on gap years? as in, lets say I applied to um Columbia, and didnt get in. I take a year off, (basically not go to college right after my ALs) and apply again after working on my application. Will the whole “hey, this applicant applied before and got rejected!” thing affect my chances? And the CommonApp essay, is it okay to pretty much write again on the same idea if it was really good in the first place? The last question asks for your opinions people ^ ^ the first one… well anyone heard about some lucky person getting in the second time?

columbia may come off as a bit too high … I’m talking about the top unis in US. Not harvard and yale but lower.

& I so agree on straight A’s etc being more of a cut off.

Speedyz, yes i was accepted to LSA through EA.

catJedi, why don’t you wait for decisions first?
columbia is extremely competitive. so unless i KNEW i would be admitted after a year, i wouldn’t do it. and that’s impossible to know because it’s such a crap shoot.
what are your stats? if you list them here, we can chance you and maybe offer better advice.

to answer your second question, yes, there have been people who applied during gap years after receiving disappointing decisions during their senior year.

@ catjedi… i dont think gap year makes very much of a difference, IF you didnt stay home all the time and did a job or an internship or something of this sort. i’ve also taken a gap gear, and i wrote 2 books(they took 6 months of hard work to complete) which are now published, did a 2 month internship, and a couple other things. but even if you didnt do something significant you still have, or so i believe, a fair chance of getting in as long as your stats are good in the first place. and dont apply to the same university if you were going to, its not a great idea.

@pakipower It was just an example. I didn’t really apply to Columbia…
@ qwerty11 wow good for you ! XD I’m something of a writer myself, and I’d love to look into your work ! Did you get in EA anywhere ? Or are you waiting till April for the results ?

well, fish @ not advisable to apply to the same uni again.

I have fairly good grades. I mean, don’t we all? And I can’t really pay for uni abroad so my choices were limited to need blinds which are, as we all know, crap shootingly competitive. But I’ve got my heart set on a college and if I don’t get in, I was thinking of applying again next year but the “applying again” catch bothers me

and what is up with the SAT not being administered in Karachi in May/June ?? =|

i applied to brown ED, but i asked for a lot of aid, so i got deferred. at that time i was in the process of writing my books, so i didnt tell brown about them.
and my books arent exactly what you’re thinking they are, theyre syllabus books, they’ve got chapters and a lot of questions(which i made myself). but i love to write english too, i’ve written some short stories(none published) and a couple newspaper articles.

and dont worry about applying again. as long as you are a good fit for that university and you really want to attend that particular university you’ll have a good chance getting in. who knows maybe you dont even have to apply again.

SATs are NOT administered in Karachi in M/J???!!!
Are you joking?? In Lahore, they are so why not in Karachi??

I think I disagree with the idea of re-applying. I am fairly sure I would be happy no matter where I end up, regardless of whether it was my first or last choice. But then again, I am the sort to never worry about things like College prestige.

Any Grammarians here? Am I the only one?! :(

@ wasti So not kidding… they’re only administered at “Planwel” or whatever, and that too is ALWAYS full. SERIOUSLY. Even if you check six months before the deadline, it never has an empty seat!

@ qwerty ah course books! what subjects? I missed your stats, you must have posted them on some previous page but what colleges did you apply to?

Guess I’ll have to wait till April. RIGHT before my birthday. Sheesh!

And I gave the LUMS SSE test as well. Admath section was ridiculous!

@ hafsa I’m guessing you have really good stats anyway I just applied to three colleges because I can’t afford anything above Rs 4 lakh a year. Even in Pakistan.

So MIT sends out its decisions on the 20th of March… so … MIT gonna start the rejections spree… not cool :P
