The official Pakistani Thread for the class of 2016

@Glaedr & Leo, how did you guys send the fee waivers? Mailed them via post or via email and who wrote them for you? The guidance counselor?

Plus about no replies from the colleges, well i e-mailed most of them asking about the whole procedure and a few of the replies said that if you dont receive any response or reply, you should consider your fee waived. But just to make sure you should double check via phone or emailing them again, the admission offices.

BTW did any set their MIT interview up and did you get any reply from the that guy who’s suppose to interview us? Cos its been almost 2 weeks, sent an email twice but no reply yet. :(

*anyone set

I wrote one for all the unis, printed them and got them signed by my counselor (my headteacher- hates paperwork XD) And then just posted them (via snail mail that is) =D

And its such a huge relief to read about the reply you got from the unis, cuz I got similar info- just wanted to confirm. So thanks usamatiwana =D

Oh, and i’m not applying to MIT- so sorry won’t be able to answer that! Good luck =D

oh, when did you mail them? I’m yet to dispatch all of them  I hope they arent just a little too late or I might have to fax them over night.

Well you are welcome leo? Which colleges are you applying to btw and in what program do you wish to major in?

Oh, well lets hope I get a reply from him soon enough.

thanks leo. I’m exercising some strong self-control here. If you know what I mean. Anyway, yeah, ain’t losing hope. Applying RD to other good ones. Let’s see :)

@usamatiwana, where are you located?
Also, I know a friend who already had an MIT interview and that was almost 3 weeks ago. From as much as I know, he really had to cling on to that interviewer and stalk him for days before being able to set the interview up. So if I were you, I’d do the same. It’s a good thing you can set an interview. A good report from an interviewer could do a lot of good to your cause. So yeah! Go crazy on that guy. CALL HIM. My friend did too.

Guys i need help.
My SAT score is 1980.750 math 640 Reading 590 Writing. :frowning:
SAT2 Math 730 Phy 760
I have average ECs and a summer internship on my record.
11 As Olevel
5 As AS Level

Term results consist of mainly Bs
Also i will be asking for financial Aid.

Im really confused about where to apply,I was thinking about Ivys and other top notch unis but now i think that i dont stand a chance as only a couple ppl are selected from Pak.

Can you guys tell me the universities in which i have a good chance of getting accepted.

I will be applying for business/engineering in different unis.

Thanks.

You could try Cornell with a SAT 1390 (M+V). If I remember correctly, they still do not consider an applicant’s SAT Writing Score.

@usamatiwana- Yes, post them ASAP! You’re not late, but it can take time for them to reach.

I’m applying to HYPD and Amherst. Current choice of major is economics (closest I could come to in terms of the career path I’m looking at).

@dwarvensniper- LOL, I know all about self-control, trust me XD So good luck! And hope you’ll share the Upenn decision with us anyway! =D

@Confused6- Join the club of all us ‘confused’ folks with mild stats and a desperate need for financial aid! Just so you know, I’m no expert or experienced person on the subject, but I suggest you try the Liberal Arts colleges, and pick maybe one or two of the big-name schools. Deadlines are pretty close, so dunno how well you’ll be able to shape your app, so don’t stress yourself by applying to a dozen places. Pick a few, and put everything you got into them.

Here’s a CC thread I found useful on the subject, and one that made me consider why I never took the Liberal Arts colleges so seriously-
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/international-students/1245918-financial-aid-loans-internationals-looking-study-u-s.html

Also, reconsider retaking the SAT in Jan and just focus on bringing up your Writing and CR score- then maybe superscoring could help bring up your overall score.

Good luck!

I dont think Unis accept Jan test scores. So im stuck with the ones i currently have.

Leo and perazziman can you please list a few universities where im likely to get accepted.

My Uni list before the SAT consisted of: MIT Princeton UPenn etc. but now after doing research im really confused.I only know of three or four liberal arts colleges but they dont have Business or Bio-medical engineeeing programs.

Your assistance would be appreciated.Thank you

@dwarvensniper I’m in Islamabad and that is like the worst thing as far as my interview is concerned, the guy is the CEO of linkdotnet who is suppose to interview us, as I have heard about the CEO thingo. And they have given the UAN number for linkdotnet on mymit account to contact him, that leads me a customer support operator and I’m pretty much confused how am I suppose to contact him. Plus he is in located in Lahore so I cant just drop in his office to set things up for the interview.

The only other top school that ignores SAT writing, that I know of, is University of Chicago.

Confused6, most of the unis I checked out do. :S They do state they’d prefer international students to be done with standardized testing by Dec, but still, they didn’t outright say Jan scores are unacceptable.

How about you contact the unis individually in this regard?

Also, I had the same problem as you- the unis I was looking at didn’t really offer a Bachelor’s program in Commerce (dunno about biomed tho). However, from what I’ve learnt (more like inferred), a Liberal Arts degree can be substituted for a BBA or BCom or something…you can specialise in Busines with an MBA degree…that’s why I’m taking up economics- but eco was always my first choice anyway.

Can someone please verify this tho?

And exactly how much fin aid are you looking at here? Need-blind? or you think you can manage a decent portion of it?

The problem is that i have no such interest in Econ.
I gave it in AS and got an A but now i find it boring,I dont know why.The only thing i like is the theory of marginal utility.

Frankly, im not even sure about what to study (even bio med)…I just need to get admitted somewhere nice, then ill decide.

I can manage about 10-15K.

And to top it all i can only apply to eight unis…so i need to make difficult choices.Choices in which ill be sure to get in.

I would love to apply to Princeton,Upenn,Stanford but they seem out of my reach.

@Confused6.
I have roughly the same grades as you, however i’m giving the sat again in january and hoping a 2150+. Are you applying for econ or business. I think babson would be kind of a match for business and you’re applying for financial aid.
I dont know much about financial aid, but dont the ivies have need blind policy (atleast some do). if you really think you have a chance you should apply because these universities will consider you regardless of the cost you attend.
Just my 2 cents.
@ everyone else. how much does asking for financial aid hurt your applications?
I’m just curious since i’m even applying (no financial aid required though).

hello to every one,i am ehsan ullah, electrical enigneer from uet lahore.
seeking postgraduate admssion in any foriegn university.suggest me.

PAKISTAN2012, you are right, need blind means the school looks at your application without figuring out how you plan to pay for your education. How much money they actually offer you after you are accepted is a different issue. I believe part of the reason schools are reluctant to offer Aid is because it is not possible for them to verify assets, like it is for an American family with IRS tax records.

At many universities, Deans have access to funds for grants, but they usually offer them, after you have demonstrated academic ability. I know I managed to snag 1/4 to 1/2 tutions in my junior and senior year, back in the 80s.

One angle you could try to explore, to get FinAid, is to apply to schools that are trying to obtain tier one status from the Carnegie foundation. These schools want to be recognized as top research institutions. As such they try to enroll as many kids as possible with high SAT scores/ stats to show they can attract talent, by offering merit scholarships. University of Houston is one such school. You can probably find a few others, if you google the topic.

Another angle to explore, is applying to schools such as, North Dakota State. There have been huge oil and gas discoveries in that state, which are generating a lot of revenue for the local govt. and it’s citizens. I would think some of this money would be flowing to their state school system, so locals can be hired by all the oil, service & construction companies in this economic boom. Same could be true for colleges in Pennsylvania and Ohio too. So look into it.

ehsan ullah, Take the GRE and TOEFL exams. Depending on how you do, you will have a better idea of which schools may accept you in the USA.

okay I’m officially hopeless about my MIT interview as I have been constantly emailing my EC for two weeks now, tried to call him like a hundred times during office times from the last few days, nobody ever picks up the extension number and the operator always says he cant put me through  Better e-mail admission office about it now.

YaY, My dad just called after like a minute of my previous post, he somehow managed to set my interview up  XD Probably on Jan 13 IA. :)
