heyitslauriebeth - I think 2000 sounds like a good goal :)

asha.papillon - Since you say you think you can improve I say definitely retake, especially because of the schools you’re applying to. Try as well pull the math up a little bit if you can.

ADHDFTL - Sounds good. Probably more important to work on other stuff especially since you feel that you won’t improve the writing.

^ UC’s weight writing equally to CR and M.

I feel that I could improve my writing score overall but probably not the essay. I am not very concerned about UC schools since UCSD/UCD/UCI/UCSC are all fine schools and I can definitely get in there. I heard numerous times though that writing is not considered as much as the other scores for private schools ( which would be my reach ). I’m not really interested in UCB/UCLA since they seem almost as hard to get into as an ivy without the prestige/faculty and resources.

^. I don’t know if you’ve checked it out but there’s a really good thread called how to write a 12 essay in 10 days. You might want to look it up

If you’re in-state, UCB/UCLA aren’t really hard to get into. The acceptance rate for UCB/UCLA are similar to some of the lower ivies because a lot of the students who apply to the lower-tier UC’s also apply to UCB/UCLA since the UC application makes it very easy to apply to multiple UC schools. If you’re considering the ivies, I would definitely retake. Plenty of people apply to ivies w/ consistent 700s with similar stats (your competition). Writing might not be weighted as equally, but you’ll be at a definite disadvantage.

Thanks, Secret Asian Man. I probably will retake it, but I don’t know how much I can do for math. For this past test I prepped pretty hard, focusing almost solely on math, doing lots of problems, etc. I just don’t know if I can improve much more. Timed math is not one of my strong points.

aluminum boat,
I can write great essays but during timed scenarios ( especially with the SAT’s 25 minute limit ), I cannot write a large amount of quality material. I’ll definitely check it out but so far my limitation is not finding good examples or creating an acceptable thesis/outline, it’s more of an anxiety/perfectionist attitude which is limiting me ( I think ). I definitely can improve the MC portion but I’m not sure if that’s worth the time considering the ACT.

The only ivy I’d be interested in is cornell which I seem to be in line with already based off of SAT/GPA. I’m not particularly interested in heavy workload/cutthroat environments. I am also taking the ACT so we’ll see how that turns out.

For carnegie mellon would my scores be adequate? I’m looking at college board’s site and apparently I am in the top 20% for CR, 30% for math and bottom 20% for writing.
Again I’m not interested in HYPSM.

Umm I think you should check the thread out. It pretty much breaks the essay into a formula. And while it may not be the best essay you’ve written, it’ll be what the reader wants to see and therefore you’ll get a 10+.
And yea I think you should retake it if you’re in the bottom 20%. Especially if Its writing because it’s easy to fix

PSATs:
690 M
680 W
650 CR
1340/1600
2020/2400

October '08:
700 W
690 CR
650 M
1340/1600
2040/2400

May '09
780 W
720 CR
670 M
1390/1600
2170/2400

The only thing that is making me consider retaking is the prospect of replicating that 690 Math score back from the PSATs, which would knock me up to a 1410/1600. I honestly feel like I’ve hit the high water mark when it comes to my CR score, so I think that will stay the same with a retake. But I know I can’t get that 780 again. By a fluke I only missed one MC. My essay was crapola and only got a 10. My essay won’t get any higher or lower (at least I don’t think so) and I’m sure as hell not going to replicate that MC score. So, we’re basically talking about sacrificing my 2170/2400 in order to boost my 1390/1600 above that magic 1400/1600 mark that I have stuck in my head. I kind of feel like colleges will view my writing score as providing an artificial boost to a mediocre /1600 score. What does everyone else think? Worth a retake? Is the /1600 more important than the /2400 score?

Hmmm I’m considering taking the ACTs since I can’t seem to improve my SAT score. Is that a good idea? I’ve never done anything for it before but I will have some time this summer to prepare for it.

Also, I know some schools ask for either ACT w/ writing OR SAT & SATIIs. Does that mean that they won’t accept the ACT and SATIIs? I’ve taken 3 SATIIs already and gotten good scores on them (2 800s and 1 780).

^ If you submit your SAT IIs, they will consider them. It’s just not required if you submit the ACT.

Sorry to repost again, but does anyone think i should retake a 2170? (740 CR 680 M 750 W)… I was thinking I might retake it again if only for the math, but then again I make take the SAT II Math subject test instead.

Thoughts?

^ I think you’re good if you take the subject test. But it really depends on the college you want to go to

So, I took the SAT back in March or April (can’t even remember) and got a 2200: 800 CR 660 M 740 W. Then I just took the ACT in June and got a 34, with a 35 in math. Will colleges sort of ignore my bad SAT math score if I have a good ACT math score? I think the SAT math is just in a format that doesn’t work well for me; I freak out during the short sections. During the ACT, I can get over my initial panic because I have an entire hour to work on the test.
So anyone have experience with bad SAT scores/good ACT scores?

sylvie88, I’m in a similar position. I got a 34 as well on my ACT, with a 36 Reading. But I got a 690 on CR the second time I took the SAT. Does my Reading score cancel out my somewhat low CR score?

sammee here.
i think colleges like CR more, though, because there are vocab questions.

Hey guys, got my score just now (I’ve been away for a week at Boys State aka hell) and I’m so bummed out. This was my second try, I thought I walked away with easily a 2200.

I got: CR 680, M 640 W, 800 :D

Last time i got CR 680 M 680 W 740

I didn’t particularly prep a whole lot for this but i did work on some math. Now should I retake? If I took it I would obviously get really serious and AT LEAST get over that 700 hump for both math and CR. I didn’t study CR at all but i was sort of over confident because of my general affinity for English and, as a result, I guessed a lot. For math I did a lot of practice problems but not really any serious timed math sections, so that could’ve been why. Should I retake if I’m confident that I could get a 2200+ (700 700 800?) Or should I look at the ACT? I’m going to apply to Northwestern and Columbia (l have legacy at the latter) but more realistically I’m looking at UVA and William and Mary (instate).

Please someone, give me some advice

yellowismellow, that sucks, considering I get all the vocab questions right and somehow miss the comprehension questions on the SAT. But colleges won’t know that! Man, I’ll just have to retake.

March SAT: 670CR, 700M, 720W
May SAT: 680CR, 660M, 720W

my superscore (2100) is only 10 points higher than my best single-sitting score… should i retake a third time in the fall? i’m definitely going to take the ACT in sept/oct, but i’m not sure whether or not a third SAT is worth it

CID2010, I’m in your boat
