Thanks guys for evaluating! Just gotta wait now...the dreadful dreadful waiting...

-2220 SAT 1st sitting (780math/680verbal/760writing)
-3.5 unweighted gpa in all AP classes this year. (difficult high school respected by umich)
-somewhat above average essays
-great ec's related to my field of study
-out of state

-the last piece of my application was received dec 3rd, and i have still not heard back yet.

evenpace631 - If you're high school is actually difficult, your gpa is most likely a result from it. I would say a match (uncertain), though my "chance" could be better if you provided more information about yourself... (as in look above)

salpert: you look like a match to me!

shourai: Are you a junior? BC otherwise the early admission thing has long since passed. First off, my deepest sympathies to your family about your mother. I'm proud of you for even getting this far through all of that! That being said, it might be hard for them to overlook a 4 semester slump in grades. One semester, or even two, is understandable under those conditions. But they really want to see how you recovered from that. You said your mother passed during your soph. yr, but even your frosh year your grades were going down, and didn't pick up until the 2nd semester of your junior year. I think they will def. cut you some slack, but just how much remains to be seen.

Your ACT is awesome though, and make sure your counselors and/or teachers emphasize how you persevered. And good luck, I know you will succeed wherever you go!

if I explain everything in my essay; what do you think my chances are? And yes, im a junior

My explanation still applies even if you explain everything. I just think 4 semesters is a huge slump, despite everything. But please don't take that the wrong way, I def sympathize with you. I'd still put you at a slight reach though. good luck!

well really its just soph yr [2 semesters] tht it affected
junior yr I kinda messed up on my own first semester.. but maybe I could inlcude tht for the same reasoning as the soph yr.. so tht would be 3 semesters

my counselor doesnt know my reasoning.. I guess I should explain it to her.
but now im really nervous/worried

I really really wanna get in

salpert, i think you're a match. Good SAT/ACT, and pretty good gpa. you're unique ECs will most likely get you in (cause mich loves those)

Shourai, I have to put you at a reach. Your gpa, as it seems, is Weighted, and is really low on the Umich scale (Umich only counts soph/junior year gpa so your gpa is around 3.38). Your ECs are not spectacular A death in your family is accountable for maybe two semesters worth, but three (during junior) is iffy because that means that over the summer, you still did not get over your grievances and the admissions office may not believe the fact that you were still affected by your loss. I believe that the key to your admission lies in your essay. Write amazing essays that portray your situation and how you overcame it. Also, if you haven't already, TELL YOUR COUNSELOR. To tell admissions through an essay is one thing, but to solidify the fact of your mother's death with a counselor's note would be more assuring to admissions. Even better would be if you also had a teacher (best if junior because of the high rise in your grade) to say that you were troubled but had the capacity to overcome it. If you can do all of the above, write amazing essays, and keep your gpa up, you can maximize your chances of getting into UofM

Let me clarify one thing you said, shourai: Do NOT lie and say your grades junior year were bad because of your mother's death. That is simply taking advantage of an already unfortunate situation. Tell them the truth: your sophomore year, you had a ton of issues, and your junior year, it took you a semester you find yourself, to be reinvigorated, to figure out your purpose and get back on track. They will appreciate and respect that much more than a 3 semester depression slump (as I said, 2 is understandable, 3 is pushing it to the limit). Be honest. And, tell your counselor.

Make the focus of your essay on how you bounced back, not on why your grades were poor. They'll be able to see that when they read that your mother died.

And j89 hit it on the nose with the junior year teacher-rec thing. Good luck!
