Well, it certainly doesn’t have to be a video or in electronic format. I have to go back and read the “rules”, such as they are. I cannot right now, but I seem to remember there was something about not sending things like actual sculptures. Let me check on that and get back to you. Since I understand you wouldn’t want to get into specifics on here, I will PM you later and give you contact info for me so I can help you sort this out. I know at this point you don’t have enough PM’s to hit me back that way.

Oh, and congrats to her (and you) on the great scholarship! She is obviously quite the excellent student.

Guess I know the responsible answer to this, but here goes anyways. DS2 applied late Oct. but due to a mistake and then a miscommunication about what was missing with his school, did not get his SSR sent until Nov. 11.
Ideally he hears something rolling like so many on here have, but how is it really supposed to work for those who do not receive their admissions until Dec. 15? Do you hope you’ll get in and do the hard work for PTA and/or DHS in the hopes that you are admitted? Does Tulane consider that you tried for these two awards when making their admissions decision?

In short, yes and yes, I feel confident. Just my opinion based on all I have observed, but since interest is a big factor, making the effort to apply for these awards is a demonstration of said interest. If your S has the resume Tulane outlines to be in the running for one of these awards, then he would almost for sure be admitted if he does the work to apply for one or both. Of course, he would have to get his apps in early enough for them to see he is applying. Do they still ask on the admissions application if you are applying for these awards?

^ Good question! I think they might have. Not sure if DS is a contender since he is not in the 33+ crowd, but both applications are so compelling he’s excited about doing them. Great essay questions
Thanks as always FC!

My D is solidly in the top 25% of Tulane applicants based on last year’s CDS. However, I’m certain she’s not in the tippy top of the applicant pool. So, she indicated on the app that she would not be applying for the PTA. Was this a mistake? Can she apply anyway? Should we ask her admissions counselor? Thanks…

No, it’s not a mistake if she isn’t going to apply, and if you don’t think she has a realistic chance to win. Only a few percent (maybe 4%?) of the incoming class has probably won a a DHS or a Paul Tulane. I base that on knowing the size of the typical incoming classes and how many of the 125 winners of a DHS/PTA typically end up at Tulane.

It’s not detrimental to an applicant to not apply for these awards, it is just that those who have the very top stats are often thinking of going to the most competitive schools out there. The Ivies, Stanford, Duke, Vandy, the elite state schools…So when one of those students, who otherwise might give the impression that they are using Tulane as a “safety”, takes the time to do the work for these applications, it helps them tell Tulane that they are more serious about the school. Because Tulane has often turned down students with Ivy level stats who don’t even bother to answer the Why Tulane question, or it’s obvious that they gave no real thought to it. But many with those level stats are really interested in Tulane, and that’s what Tulane is going for here, to try and attract those students away from that group of universities.

Of course none of us can say for sure, but it is significantly probable based on past years for the DHS, and last year the PTA followed the same schedule for the most part.

Do we hear either way and is it possible for someone who was deferred due to interest sensitivity to receive one (the admissions counselor said that it is, so my question is whether it is realistic)? Also, would winning the scholarship also mean that I am accepted? I was deferred before I submitted my scholarship application (I submitted the scholarship application on the deadline).

Yes, definitely possible for a deferred student to win. If you win, then you are accepted, of course. Winners are notified by UPS Express package. Non-winners receive a letter by regular mail, I believe.

I was looking through the Admissions facebook page and in 2012 the DHS notifications were sent out on February 16th. Didn’t see anything about last year.

WOW- Time warp. Just realized reading this that my DS got his DHS notification 6 years ago today (today being presidents day). Don’t recall the calendar date but it was presidents day, and came via UPS priority delivery.

Last year, PTA winners got a UPS package and non-winners got a “we’re sorry” email. Also, before the PTA packages went out, an announcement was made on Tulane’s site (Jeff’s blog, I think). So, look out for that!

Alright thanks everyone for the responses. I read all of the other threads obsessively for the past few days. One other question I had: how big of an impacts do my stats have on this? I received the 25k scholarship and so i know that I’m more apt to get the scholarship than a regular Joe blow (according to you guys) but my actual stats suuuuuuuuck. 5 AP’s and normal ACT of 30. So I’m not so hot. So my chances are slim?
