What if I got accepted mostly because of my picture? What if someone who happened to be reading my application at the time only liked how i looked, and that swayed his/her decision?? At first, I thought the picture thing was a good idea for Columbia but now I'm worried about getting accepted only because someone was shallow. I know this may sound frivolous, but this has been bugging me for a really long time. Is anyone else having similar worries? I tried to phrase this without sounding cocky or anything.

…
Unless you’re Heidi Klum/that level of gorgeousness, I doubt the pic had any effect on your admissions decision. Maybe it even hurt your chances! OH SNAP! jk :P

That’d be affirmative action to a whole new level. It would spark endless debates about the unfairness of evaluating based upon looks. That wouldn’t be very nice.

beyond the fact that you were likely’d and that is a tough and rare feat, i doubt it was your picture alone as the arbiter of your ‘pending’ acceptance. it would take a lot more than that.

well, it doesn’t even have to be cuz the picture is attractive. it could also be because someone thought i was ugly and admitted me because i wasn’t intimidating.

or it could also be something like… my app portrayed me as a specific type of person. but my picture sort of balanced it out. (and maybe some schools want some level of balance, which I couldn’t have shown without my picture)

so if you believe in multiple structural options, you could easily conceive of a world in which you were admitted or denied without the picture, but that negates the reality of material truth: you did submit a picture and you were admitted.

counterfactuals are hard and it is why social sciences have a lot of trouble with them. because essentially it is like playing a game of jenga and then trying to go back and start over by changing your 3rd decision of 30. the material end is only fully relateable with regards to the dynamic processes that created it.

umm, what is this picture that’s being discussed?

awww thanks admissionsgeek. those were the most comforting words ever

@hinderpanda- you can submit a photo of yourself in your application

Mine was a really cheesy photo I took in front of a wall so I hope it won"t!

But, Pigs…You’re in! Isn’t that the main thing? That picture would have to be pretty darn stunning (in one way or another) in order to be a deciding factor…don’t ya think? :)

admissionsgeek is living up to his name.

Or maybe it’s like a hot club–they need to keep a good ratio of attractive guys:girls inside

i sent in a picture of me AT columbia that i’d taken during my campus visit … reallllly sucking up there, i know, haha
i really doubt it has any major effect on admissions though. or at least i like to think it wouldn’t.

You’re concerned you submitted a picture and got in? I’d be concerned if I submitted a picture and got rejected! But I understand the “why me?” feeling you have, like the only survivor in a horrific plane crash. That’s how I felt after ED. Just be glad you’re in and proud to be a Columbian.

I nominate this for silliest thread of all time. Honestly, do you sit around actively dreaming up things to worry about? … On the other hand, maybe you’re right – maybe the picture WAS the only reason you got in. Why don’t you post it here, and we can be the judges.

You my good sir have won the thread.
