The posts we see every April...

Curm used to call those posts “swallows returning to Capistrano”! He actually titled the thread that.

Kat

^^^^^
One of the best, ever!

How can I get resident tuition at an OOS school? Tons of those.

Will a 2400 on the SAT help get me scholarships, that comes up a lot.

"Trying to choose between tiny rural LAC and large urban research university! They both offer my major! Any advice? "

This will probably be my son!

…and the rare, but possible "I got accepted to HYP, and every other ivy. Which one do I choose?

My D was accepted to Harvard but is turning it down to follow her BF to Stonehill College. Is she ruining her life?
My S wants to major in anthropology but we want him to take the full ride to a direct entry Physical Therapy program. If we offer to buy him a car do you think he’ll take it?

How I miss Curm!

I forgot my FAVORITE.

Is it OK for me to make deposits at more than one school to buy some time to make my decision?

My accountant says that if we put our million dollar house into a trust and name my elderly parents who live on social security as the trustees, we can shield our assets and get more financial aid. Will this prevent my parents from getting the maximum medicare benefit once they have a million dollar asset in their names?

Variations of “Blame it on the Black guy.” “I couldn’t get in because I’m white.” Affirmative Action made it impossible for me." “Only poor kids get accepted.” I didn’t get in because I am a girl or a boy." I really worked hard in high school and it’s all wasted now." “My parents wouldn’t pay for me to go to Harvard/Yale or whatever because I got accepted to UCB or Michigan or whatever. It’s not fair.” “I only got accepted to Cornell and I applied to all the Ivies. What a disaster.” I didn’t get into Harvard should I go to community college or Cornell and try and transfer?"

Midwestsalmon…variation on yours…

I got accepted to XYZ College but it has no majors I am interested in. Should I go there?

Haven’t seen these two yet so:

“My parents don’t want to pay, how do I become independent?!”

And my personal favorite:
“How do I lie and cheat and slime my way into being classified as in-state?”

I got into NYU and my need was fully met!!! But can someone tell me what this PLUS for $35,000 is?

What scholarships can I apply for now so I can afford to go to college?

How come we didn’t qualify for any aid? We’re middle class and our $200,000 income just isn’t enough to pay for my kid’s dream school.

Why did I save money for my kid’s college? If I had spent it all I would have gotten financial aid – it’s not fair that poor people get money to go to college.

(You know you’ve been on CC too long when you can participate in this thread.)

I really want to go to X [ a college with an acceptance rate below 20%.] I didn’t get in. How do I appeal the decision?

These questions only seem repetitive because we hang out at CC. Some people dive in here for the first time when faced with actual decisions. Others just want to brag, using a question as a guise: “Got into Harvard, MIT and Stanford, waitlisted at Princeton. Should I try to get my SAT up from a 2380 to get in? Help!”

These, however, aren’t my peeve questions. Nope, those would be the ones from parents of 8th graders asking what they need to do to position their little snowflake/future Ivy candidate so he’ll be most attractive to ad coms in 4 years. Uh, how about allowing your kid to, you know, enjoy high school?

There’s always the post-admission, angry rants about the rejected applicant’s high school classmates (typically athletes) who were accepted to Dream Ivy despite lower SAT scores.

And the waitlist threads that drag on through June.

But look at the bright side. There are tons of students who are not blessed with competent advisors and parents who have gone through the cycles before. They do indeed post silly questions but it is quite understandable when 18 years old think they have to make the biggest decision in their life. The bright side, of course, is when helpful parents are willing to offer guidance and solid advice to strangers via an anonymous board. The recipients of such advice are surely happy to find generous help. In my opinion, that positive dwarfs the occasional brags and annoying claims of discrimination.

Among the most frustrating to me - I got into NYU but they didn’t meet my EFC. How do I borrow the $60K to attend?

“I got into [out-of-state public university], but it is so expensive and the financial aid is almost nonexistent. I thought that public schools are supposed to be cheaper…”

Somehow my post got truncated. It is along the lines of got into XYZ great schools, but my parents don’t want me to leave the state.

“I got into [out-of-state public university], but it is so expensive and the financial aid is almost nonexistent. I thought that public schools are supposed to be cheaper…”

ucbalumnus—agree wholeheartedly—why is the grass always greener at someone else’s state flagship?

Any post focusing on specific grad school requirements for students still in high school and incoming freshman.

Sure, have a long term goal, but let’s face it, most students do not graduate with the majors they think they want to begin with, if for no other reason than as high school students, they haven’t had much exposure to many, many fields.
