The posts we see every April...

On that note, attempting to parse out minor differences between programs, especially via liberal helpings of the US News’ graduate rankings.

From a relative newbie who has lots of questions: YIKES. ~:>

While it is true that many students change their majors, students should also be aware enough about such things in order to avoid inadvertently closing off any potential graduate or professional school options that may be of interest. Decisions made while in high school can have pre-med and pre-law implications, for example (e.g. grades in college courses taken while in high school are included in GPA for medical and law school applications).

However, it is less than illuminating to see people writing of “grad school” without specifying what kind(s) are of interest, since PhD programs, medical school, law school, etc. are very different from each other in preparation and admission practices.

Which is better- UTexas or UMichigan?

I got caught drinking at Prom. Will Dartmouth rescind my admission?

I got caught selling alcohol outside Prom. Will Columbia rescind my admission? Do I have to report it?

I got caught stealing the final for calculus. Will I have to go to a directional state u?

(This is currently my favorite thread, by the way)

Any post mentioning how the poster drives ancient cars, never eats in restaurants, hasn’t taken a vacation since his or her honeymoon, and is jealous of someone whose kids got “more” (like you ever really know anybody else’s financial situation).

<<<
ucbalumnus—agree wholeheartedly—why is the grass always greener at someone else’s state flagship?
<<<<

“Because I don’t want to go where everyone at my school goes to.”

I really hate the posts about how “all my hard work has been wasted if I don’t get to go to X school.” Those posts annoy me because many, many students work hard. That’s what they’re supposed to do.

“Which is better- UTexas or UMichigan?”

Why do they ever ask that question? Of course it is UTexas. :p

what’s the point of this post other than your own self amusement.
not in the spirit of providing advice to those seeking it. It boarders on mockery on the middle school level

I’ve seen this recently in CalPoly and Case Western decision thread:

“I was waitlisted, 36 ACT, 2360 SAT, 800 to two subject tests, 4.0 UW, 14 APs, excellent EC’s/internships. I was accepted to Stanford EA/ WUSTL/Chicago, yet Case had the nerve to waitlist me. Who do they think they are? I’m humiliated. Oh well, if they want to accept mediocre students to their mediocre institution, then I guess, I’m OK with that.”

“I had perfect grades and test scores, great essays, glowing recommendations, and impressive ECs, but I did not get into a single Ivy League school and my life is over because I may have to go to my state flagship now. Where did it all go wrong?/Why did Harvard give away my spot to a vastly inferior black candidate?/How do I appeal the decision?/Validate my stats.”

“what’s the point of this post other than your own self amusement.

To add to someone’s 13,000 posts and remind everybody they have been on these boards since gas was 30 cents a gallon.

It’s the Internet. Deal with it. It’s funny!

Can I put down my deposit at two schools, appeal my financial aid/scholarships, and attend where I get the most?

Should I attend honors program in my major at XYZ univ ranked 75, or attend ABC univ. ranked in the top 30 as an LSA student? How hard is to transfer to my major at ABC univ?

My parents don’t want to pay their EFC at this private university & want me to go to state univ. What do you suggest?

I didn’t get into my dream school. Should I take a gap year and reapply? How hard will it be to transfer to my dream school next year?

“I am trying to decide between HYPSCM…I am only a junior in High School with a 3.5 Gpa and haven’t taken my SAT yet.”
“That URM stole my spot.”

A proliferation of posts with the word “screwed” in the title.

I have a 0 EFC and was accepted at NYU but they only offered me $50,000 a year in loans. It is my dream school so I am going to make it work whatever it takes. (true post)

“What’s the best freshman dorm?” at schools that randomly assign housing.

“Who else is taking Math 55 (Harvard)/Honors Analysis (Chicago)/Insert your own impossibly difficult math class here)?”

“Can I take X+1 classes?” where X is max freshman course load. I especially love when that’s posted pre-acceptance.

My all time favorite pre-acceptance: “When do likely letters start going out?”

I have always wanted to be a doctor even though my grades aren’t very good, which of these schools has the best placement into med school?

I have to tell you that I find this thread really sad. I am new to everything related to my child going to college. This is our first and I felt good posting on here and getting replies to help me better understand the process. This thread makes me fell embarrassed to post any questions. Believe it or not, quite a few of those you are making fun of are very good questions to me, and instead of a list of the questions, I’d actually love to have the answers. While you are busy making these posts, would you at least add a link to past replies to these questions? That would help me and most likely quite a few other new parents. Thank you.
