How much does dedication to visual art help in college admissions? Especially for those hard to reach school, will sending in a portfolio help? I know it probably wouldn't hurt to send it to the art departments (unless my work is really really bad...) but making slides cost a lot of money. If I do send in a portfolio and declare my tentative major as something in art, could this get me into those top schools?

Literally, it could NOT GET you into the top colleges.
However, it doesn't hurt. BTW, your artwork gotta be really good (I mean kickass artwork)

thanks for the reply!
but another question: I am involved in a few art-related ec's at school (2), but would it hurt me if I didn't do much (as in only 1) activity out of school that relates to art, and instead devoted the rest of my time to something else? Would this make me seem unfocused if i plan to continue art at college?

Thank you for all your time! :D

I would recomend broadening your scopes and not focusing activities on 2 art programs.
Instead fill one of those with something that means a lot to you, like community service of some kind, clubs, activities, sports, etc..
Then, use your essay to delve into how much you love art, how much time you spend on it, and how it affects your life.
They love spread but a even more they love a hint of depth (and really deep depth at that)
