The Pros and Cons of Brown College at UVA

Membership told me to highlight 48 names, then changed their mind and said to highlight less, just in case. I hope that helps.

Iā€™m an incoming 1st year, and am thinking about applying to Brown. I like the seemingly offbeat nature of it and intellectually stimulating environment, but Iā€™m also thinking strongly about going Greek. Is this unheard of/ will joining both interfere with each other?

A deadhead born in 1993ā€¦I LOVE it! :)

Brown residents are involved in all sorts of activities. I doubt there would be a problem with being in a Greek org, but Iā€™ll defer to hazelorb.

Iā€™m definently applying here If I get accepted. I donā€™t really like the greek life (to much drinking and such) and would love a tight nite community of these dorms.

Most people in Brown have no involvement in Greek life, and there is a small but sizeable straightedge/sober group. There is an equally small sizable group that belongs to greek organizations, though. Itā€™s really a decision you will have to make. No one will hate you for joining a greek organization, but no one will applaud you either (while you might find a lot of similar Brownie faces at University Democrats or the Washington Society).

I have lived in Brown all 4 years, and I have never regretted my decision to skip traditional first year housing, but I know some Brownies on both sides of the other fence ā€“ either didnā€™t apply first year and regret that, or lived here first year and regret not having had the first year experience. It is easier to get in as a first year though, I will put that out there. I canā€™t speak to either of those other two sides, I can only say that I love it here and am only leaving because I need my car close for student teaching next year (Brownies have to park a mile away ā€“ doesnā€™t affect first years since you all canā€™t have cars anyways!). I also donā€™t drink and Iā€™m not involved in greek life, but I have friends who drink and/or do greek life.

Brown is definitely a tight knit group though, I mean how cool is it that I still get to live with and eat lunch with the people I lived with first year?? Maybe half of us lived here all four years, which is insanely awesome. Plus the upperclassmen (and now for me, lowerclassmen) are REALLY cool people who never hesitate to lend a hand. We have a 30k budget to spend on social stuff, like dances and opera trips and gladiator re-enactments and t-shirts and so on, so that is great. I love it.

But only you can decide if youā€™re willing to give up your typical first year experience for Brown. The only time I ever wondered if I made the right decision was when I went to O-Hill (first year dining hall) with 2 of my Brownie friends for this special breakfast they were having. I am a TA for a first year engineeing class so I recognized a lot of my students (a LOT!) and realized that this is a really cool social experience for them, that they get to all have breakfast together and all of their meals together here, like high school when you could all eat in the cafeteria together. So I realized then that I had missed that (and the other experiences similar). But I traded it for being able to eat with my 50 first year comrades for FOUR years plus everything else Brown gave me, so that was an okay trade for me.

^Itā€™s easiest to get into Brown as first year? ā€¦I have always thought it was the opposite, lol.

About how much harder is it for a second year to get into Brown?

Itā€™s easiest your first-year  And after that, your chances are like 50-50 depending on the group that reads your applications and how creative you can get with your answers.

It is a lot harder for a second year or any upperclassman to get in. We read 300 applications for maybe 50 spots. First year apps are much different, there are a guaranteed 50 spots and not too many people apply (still more than 50, but not the same 300:50 ratio).

^Awwā€¦ Iā€™m interested in living at Brown in my second year.

The questions from the app seem pretty crazy to me, too.

I am really considering applying to Brown (first year). When you say ā€œmiss out on first year experienceā€, what exactly do you mean?

I feel like I would much prefer Brown due to the unique individuals!

FY Experience is living with 3000 other first years in the designated first year living areas, and everything that comes with that living set up, someone else can talk more about it since I didnā€™t have it!

I am 99.99999999% percent sure I am accepting tonight, and I really want to get into brown college, it is just such a cool concept. it would also make life tolerable

Looking at all this is making me sad I didnā€™t apply. Reading the essays alone made me chuckle. Might just answer them for the comedic value.

Seems like a lot of very unique minds. Perhaps Iā€™ll try next year.

You can always come get to know Brownies in the room in Newcomb Dining Hall! :)

Anyone know when selections results will be posted? One place said June 20th another said June 6thā€¦Thanks.

Theyā€™ll be posted when membership co-chairs email the webmasters, and since there are 2 new webmasters you may have a longer wait than you expectedā€¦ Good luck with thatā€¦ It will be before housing results are posted though.

were we supposed to get some email confirming that they got our applications? I handed mine into the housing department office, donā€™t know how more direct I can get than that ;)

well the results will be posted soon so youā€™ll find out then!

sigh, it would be pretty lame to not be selected because my app didnā€™t get inā€¦ I worked on my app a lot.

OK so I didnā€™t get in. genuinely gutted right now. i actually donā€™t know what i did wrong.
