The rec center is amazing. I love the open spaces and use of glass to create an ambiance of natural lighting. Also, I like the ping-pong tables and all the exercise equipment. Hopefully the climbing wall will be ready this fall.

Were you able to go inside on open house?

i think the climbing wall will be ready this fall… they looked like they were doing finishing touches on it at that time!

I was able to go inside and see it at open house… it was amazing. everything is nearly brand new and there was SO much room. I hate gyms that make me feel crowded and gross, but this one is so open, well lighted, and very clean!

I took a tour during the open house. I also don’t like feeling crowded in gyms. I think they said something about there being a scanner that looks at the shape of your hand when you enter instead of an ID card. Can anyone confirm or reject this?

My son told me they use the hand scanner. Pretty cool!!!

When you enter the rec center you input a code that is fairly easy to memorize (although in all fairness I go to the rec 4-5 times a week) and then you scan your hand in. I think the best part of the rec center that never gets noticed is definitely the automatic turnstiles =P

I’m green with envy right now…

How do the automatic turnstiles work and does it relate to the hand scanner?

I took a tour last Sunday. Amazing facility! Makes me want to apply to Cal Poly. Do you think they would admit a 61 year old who wants to get back in shape? :-)

My daughter would be crazy not to take advantage of this place on a VERY regular basis. Well worth the fee.

Also, this may sounds silly, but I really like the whole brita-filter system set up in the rec center… i think it is a great idea and will hopefully encourage people to drink tap water from there, instead of buying new water bottles every day.

Overpriced and un-needed and they chose chocolate induced treadmills over an Olympic weight training set.

… they have olympic weight training sets actually… they pointed that out on the tour.

I think David12345 was blinded by his hatred of the chocolate treadmills and missed the weights during the tour.

Apparently Zac Efron worked out there today…

Since his brother, Dylan goes to Poly, I can imagine Zac checking it out! They’re from Arroyo Grande. He was at the Parents Weekend football game in 2010. They sat in the “suite seats”.

NTKS17 had posted:

“Apparently Zac Efron worked out there today…”

Whose Zac Efron?

LINGUINI01-

Zac Efron is my future husband :)

My daughter saw Zac’s brother last year at VG’s and all the girls were going crazy…apparently he’s cute too! Or maybe it was just the idea that it was Zac Efron’s brother! :)

Do you believe everything that your tour guide tells you? Their weights are regular weights. My friend who is grad student at Poly in their Kinis dep and talks to the head of the Kinis department dealt with the people who built the rec center and can assure you some of the things found in an Olympic training set, thus not making it a real set, are not in the rec. center.

But you can believe what you want. You can believe some one who has lived in the area most of his life and has had friends in the college or some tour guide who might have been here a couple years.
