The "RU Screw" - Bad Things About Rutgers

Can any CURRENT students discuss some of the infamous RU screw moments? Never gotten into a single class you like? Advisor is impossible to get a meeting with? Housing sucks? I will probably be matriculating at Rutgers and want to know all of it - so I can make the most informed decision.

Full disclosure: I'll be in the honors program. But I don't really get what the perks are for that. So please enlighten me.

I think the biggest honors program perks are with housing. Since there is special honors housing on Busch (McCormick) and College Ave (Brett), it is easier to get into than regular housing if you don’t get a good lottery number that year.

However, the engineering freshmen were generally unable to get into honors housing last year. A lot of us got lucky with numbers we didn’t think were very good in regular housing, though. So it worked out somewhat.

(It depends which honors program you are in, too, because I don’t know exactly what SEBS honors offers. I’m in engineering honors. The buildings I mentioned are open to SAS and Business honors students, but I don’t know about others.)

The worst RU Screw I got was when I was trying to get into honors orgo, which I’d already signed up for the previous semester, but they never put me in for some reason. I had to visit the undergraduate chemistry office several times, and each time I waited 20 minutes to see the adviser for around 5-10. Even when I finally got the special permission number and walked all the way to the registrar’s office, I found out she gave me the wrong one! I had to go back again, but was able to call in the number to the registrar instead of go in person. UGH.

And just yesterday, Rutgers didn’t close (until 4:30p), but they also didn’t shovel any of the snow. Which is ■■■■■■■■.

The women who are at the windows in student accounting hate life and probably hate you. This applies to various other secretaries and departments, but not all. I would think they get paid to talk to us, the least they could do is not be rude.

Year after year, an adjunct professor with terrible survey results gets rehired to teach an honors course. (engineering) Honors kids are required to take honors, so there’s no avoiding it.

The thing with RU Screw moments, though, is to take it with a grain of salt. Every school has its “Screw” moments, but if you are diligent, most things can be resolved with varying amounts of legwork. Or you can just ignore/laugh about the really grouchy people. There are tons and tons of things I love about Rutgers, but you asked for the bad, so here it is.

i agree with koto, the secretaries at the registrar/accounting are NASTY!!! they think their jobs are so difficult. however, a couple times i dealt with really nice secretaries  the young ones are the most helpful and enthusiastic

What is the best way to avoid getting a Prof. That has a bad history for teaching or has difficulty communicating to the students? Who is available to give you that advice before you sign up for the class?

-SOOOO many TAs
-Only about half of them speak English
-They run out of housing
-New Brunswick is sketchy
-The entire campus is ugly
-The entire campus is disorganized
-Football team sucks

I guess they just get tired of dealing with snotty, demanding students eight hours a day. Try not being rude and judgmental towards them.

tomofboston: But didn’t you just make a generalization about Rutgers’ students being snotty and demanding? Though I don’t attend Rutgers, and don’t necessarily agree with the other posts, I find your post hypocritical.

No, I was referring to the two posters I quoted.

You know what? You’re right; I am being judgmental and rude. I try to treat everyone with the respect they deserve and what I feel about certain secretaries should not be generalized to the entire department.

So I apologize.

I will assure you that I did not disrespect the secretary in any way, but I am sorry that what I wrote came across so poorly.

when i treat the window person nicely and with a smile i don’t expect rude remarks about “not knowing what i’m doing.” anyways, i’m just speaking from personal experience, no need to blow it out of proportion.

Out of curiosity tomofboston: have you dealt with some of these secretaries personally? Yes it is not right to make a generalization because yeah, not all of them are rude.

When I go in with a conflict, I do so in a respectful, polite matter with a big SMILE  on my face. But then they treat you like crap and make you feel stupid (even more stupid when you have a grin on your face and the secretaries are being rude and condescending). But I continue to be as polite to them as possible (until I walk out of the office and start cursing under my breath)

Not all of them are like that, but I’ve unfortunately come across the ones that are rude. And about students demanding stuff, well, it is the secretary’s job to listen when a student has a conflict. They are not there to get paid to sit at a counter all day and gossip with one another.

Are a lot of classes lecture hall style, or it is mostly smaller and discussion classes? Rutgers is the best financial choice for me to attend next year, and on a recent visit, my friend mentioned that besides Expos–which I apparently can AP out of–she hasn’t had a single class that wasn’t a lecture hall class yet. I’ll be going in with quite a few AP credits, which is going to help me bypass some lecture classes, but I’d definitely like to get to know my professors and I’m wondering if that’s even possible with classes that large.

If you take Honors classes, it will cut down on the class size. My son took honors intro Economics courses and only had 30 in the class as opposed to the regular classes which would be large lectures.

As for getting to know the professors in a large class it is definitely possible. My son had an elective last semester with about 100 students. He attended every class, sat right in front of the professor , participated in class discussions often and even did an optional extra credit presentation. Needless to say, he made himself known to the professor and vice versa.

Getting thousands of dollars worth of grants in your financial aid taken away, weeks before the first day, because of budget cuts
University taking away a dollar here and there from your financial aid for “processing costs” and WOOT! You get 30 bucks worth of printing for free, but you still pay hundreds of dollars to use the computer facilities. Free my ass.

Rutgers Rash is out there…nuff said.

wow. i still wanna attend rutgers though lmao.

ty for the ‘heads up’

HATERS…all of you.

surprised no one has mentioned our infamous bussing system or RUPD handing out parking tickets like candy.

lol I might change my mind about transferring to Rutgers.

These are just simple observations, and every college is gonna have their screw-overs.

Don’t worry! You’ll love Rutgers. The RU Screw is just part of the college experience and learning how to grow up.
