The Runt of the Litter

Hey CC,
I just wanted to talk about something that has been on my mind for a while. I live in a small town where everyone one knows everyone and everyone is a winner at something. Except me. Everyone around me is smart, successful and they know it. My family is made up of musicians and straight A+ students. Then again, there's me. My friends are smart and study little and get better grades than me. I'm not trying to sound like a sour loser, although I probably do (lol). I'm getting frustrated because I do study hard, I just can't seem to accokplish what everyone around me has. They celebrate together, and become closer to one another every time. I always feel left out because I haven't accomplished anything worth celebrating. I'm wondering if my time will ever come. Am I the only one who feels this way? Am I the only person on CC who isn't a genious?

CC = not a great place to go if you have self-esteem issues.
Most people are not geniuses and most people are not exceedingly brilliant at anything. Pretty much everyone has some sort of talent, though.

To answer your last question. There are MANY people on CC who aren’t geniuses (I’m one of them). Also, you’re not the only one to feel that way, quite frankly many people feel that way. Is it necessarily healthy? No. It’s this feeling of Impostor Syndrome. You’re probably a very smart person, amongst a group of also very smart people. You don’t have to try to accomplish what those around you have done. Don’t go chasing to achieve their “success”. Define your own.

I
m not a genius. So there, you
re not the only one, OK?

I am not a genius either. Don’t feel bad for not being similar to those around you. Don’t feel bad for not fitting in.

Not a genius here either.

Most of the people that seem like they are around here are either lying to themselves or really aren’t.

Don’t feel bad; just be the best you that you can be, mostly because there is only one you.

Thanks everyone for your kind words of encouragement!

It’s aways going to be harder for some people to get good grades than others, but as long as you stick with the hard work there’s no reason you can’t achieve a lot as well.
I would say at least half of the people around you probably feel the same way as you do, at least in some areas of academics. There’s no point in worrying about it, really.

Well, you did spell genius wrong… (only joking :] )

But besides that, there’s something you’re good at. I don’t even know you, but I can say for a fact that there’s something you’re good at. It could be something as simple as always being there for your friends or perhaps you’re funny, kind, or whatever. But you’re good at something. It’s all about finding what you’re good at and using that to enrich both your life and the lives of people around you. When you can do that, you’ve succeeded even more so than those “geniuses”.

My guess is that a lot of people here on CC reveal their strengths while hiding their weaknesses.
I do not mean all of you people, but that guy with a 4.0 could have taken none of the hardest courses, or that girl who has volunteered for thousands of hours could have a measly 1300 SAT score, or that kid taking twenty APs may have no time other than to study for APs, which destroys any chances of him achieving a leadership position.
Cutting to the chase, nobody is perfect. You seem to have the same flaw as I did a few years ago. You keep seeing the strengths of others, yet the only weaknesses you see are yours.

o.O MIThopeful is in college? I feel old…

Yeah… I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve been on this site.

I’m pretty smart (IQ wise…not quite a genius though) , but that honestly means nothing. Find something to be good at or find something you love. Maybe it’s a sport; and even if you aren’t good at that sport enough time and dedication will bring you to the top (it’ll be alot easier to get there if its something you love)

Maybe an activity or hobby… Lemme name a few:
Horse back riding
Rock climbing
Running
Cycling
Programming
Drawing/painting/sculpting
Coordinating/planning
Swimming/diving
Robotics
Knitting
Juggling
Magic
Reading
The list goes on!!

Find something you like, and work at it till you’re good; people can be impressed with most anything. (People are so impressed with jugglers and magicians even though that’s not necessarily considered cool/productive). And I might also add; tons of rich successful people aren’t geniuses (let’s not include the actors since that’s a given), alot of the time it takes charisma, dedication, and good morality.

Oh wow, I did spell “genius” wrong. Haha anyway thanks again everyone:)
