I'm only a freshman(Tepper) and I'm talking about intro Programming classes that use Eclipse at the moment which do not differentiate between a MAC or a PC.

All libraries have PC's and certain upper-level classes in CS might be different and use different hardware as well as software.

anything about the social life--going back to original question--we would otherwise will never know?

anthing you left out?

Even though you said that New House was good for social things, I heard that Morewood-E Tower was better. Also from what I can tell the rooms are way bigger. Any way that you could elaborate about the dorms?

Also, you said that certain floors have more students of specific schools... how does the room selection work out freshman year? Do they do this intentionally? I want to make a good decision because I got accepted ED and apparently I get to choose earlier than everyone else (which I am not sure about considering I have gotten NO useful information from CMU since my acceptance letter).

that's a good question. If they do separate students based on academic interest(s), do they also segregate students based on race?

I only said NH 5(fifth floor) was consistently the best for social things since that floor is always reserved for mostly HSS and SHS majors.

Morewood E overall is probably the same as NH or Donner. The rooms are bigger however and the loss of AC shouldn't be too bad (though there are months or so when you would be envious of NH ppl).

Picking a dorm based on social patterns is pretty dumb though. How can you say how many "non-nerds" will be in a dorm that year?

However you can figure out where such "nerds" will be most concentrated. I would probably say Hamerschlag (all guys) and Mcgill (all girls) should be avoidable.

The rest are all acceptable choices and you should have no worries about living in any of them.

Stone that is a hilarious question. No, they do not segregate based on race because that would be illegal. There are all-asian frats/sororities who are almost all asian though but that is not considered the traditional on-campus housing for students.

So far, only New House (fifth floor) does the SHS and HSS thing. The rest of the floors do not as I said I wish there was an "Tepper only" floor or dorm.

Room selection works by allowing students to pick what kind of housing they want but it goes by when you turn in your deposit so do it fast! This is why Early Decision applicants can usually get their first choice as long as it isn't Mudge or other non-freshman dorms. Don't get me wrong, you can try for Mudge and get it and some freshman do but it is not guaranteed.

For ED applicants, Donner/Morewood/New House are just about guaranteed if you want it since you have sent in your deposits relatively early. I know some RD applicants who were forced to live in hamerschlag who sent their deposits in late.

Lastly, I hope you get facebook over the summer and start engaging in online (AIM) chats. You'll find this very fun to do and it lets you pick a roommate ahead of time.

To re-iterate, only New House 5 (fifth floor) does the major clumping and any freshman housing besides Mcgill/Hamerschlag is social and good choices for freshman.

I hope you shed your generalizations about CMU as many people here are social and picking dorms based on that is pretty ridiculous :).

Accepted,

Thanks so much for all of the great information you've provided. I've never been to Pittsburgh so this is all new to me. Looks like it may definitely be a stop on our first "college tour ."

How would you characterize the music scene in Pittsburgh? Does it attract national touring groups? How is the local music scene? (Not a prerequisite for a college, but good to know anyway.)

Thanks.

Thanks to the great donations and contributions by Andrew Carnegie, Pittsburgh is filled with great museums and other centers for art. As a Carnegie Mellon student, I was frequently invited at discount and sometimes free offers to listen to symphonies, concerts, and other artists. Heinz Hall (The Heinz family also donated a lot to the arts) is one of the most active places for live music and is the home of the Pittsburgh Symphony.

At the Underground (hang-out place below Morewood) there is a stage amongst all the tables. Scheduled bands and artists play there and the music taste is quite eclectic from rock bands to jazz and classical.

I frequently hear singing on the way to class too from students in CFA. These people get strange looks and I have to admit I laugh at them sometimes as they burst out in song over getting coffee but they are very talented in what they do. CFA puts on many shows and musicals that are absolutely amazing. I cannot deny the strength of CMU's programs in the arts as you basically get Broadway-caliber shows for 5 or 10 bucks!!

I would say the music scene in Pittsburgh is mostly classical and indie. The music scene on-campus is just your normal college student music but with a lot more theatre-type/classical music as you have the CFA kids to account for. Pittsburgh does have a world-reknowned symphony and frequently people go to Heinz Hall for upper-class music.

what are the most popular drinks down there in Pittsburg??
is it easy enough to get drinks over the weekends...?? Only outside campus on in campus too?

Alcholic: Cheap beer, hard liquor (vodka/smirnoff, tequila, JD), mixers such as screwdrivers... Basically anything and everything.

Non-alcholic: Mountain dew (highest caffeine so its a personal fav among many students), Red Bull, Sobe, Coffee.

I love Wean because it has this amazing coffee shop that takes Dine X as well as your meal blocks. Their coffee is amazing and they offer pastries and sandwiches and donuts. I could seriously die for a coffee right now (I'M NOT ADDICTED!!!!) :)

i wish someone had told me about the mountain dew...

not bad.. So the booze flows during the parties i guess?
Generally, are there pubs there that readily serve alchol during the weekends?

Just about every frat has massive amounts of alcohol and here on NH 5 we store alcohol in our dorms (dont' tell anyone about it).

I don't know the policies of other dorms but here on NH 5, nobody is allowed to check our rooms without warnings so we always feel safe storing our alcohol in our dorms (just don't be a dumbass like some people COUGH xxxxx COUGH who have huge alcoholic parties in their dorms at 4am waking up our RA.

Pittsburgh has MASSIVE bars that serve alcohol. People sell fake ID downtown if you know where to look and many of my peers have fake ID's.

If I ever wanted alcohol FAST i could always ask these people (and give 'em like 20 bucks) for a bottle of smirnoff and then store it in my room.

At the moment I have about 50 dollars worth of vodka and JD in my room.

As a side note: Duke has basketball. USC has football. Carnegie Mellon has beer pong.

:)

I would definitely practice this amazing sport before you come here, as your skills will be invaluable and highly demanded.

haha, not bad..
So where do you guys normally tend to drink.. Restrict it to parties or in the lounge lol

Usual Saturday for me: Drink with my friends in our dorms, then probably move on to other dorms to drink (all on our floor). This is called "pregaming".
Then head out to a party, usually at a frat or a club such as Cozumel's. Drink more and party/dance. I'm dating this asian girl right now so sometimes we go to asian parties which are pretty damn cool 'cause KOREANS ARE INSANE at drinking.

You can basically drink anywhere. Don't be a dumbass about it but my friends and I run down the streets sometimes drinking (as there are no cars after midnight or so). at NH5, we can drink in our dorms and at parties/frats and people's apartments.

Pittsburgh is the nation's 2nd biggest college town and there are apartments EVERYWHERE around the U.pitt and Carnegie Mellon campus.

Note: with all this talk about drinking, realize that people who dont' drink go to parties too and have fun. Frequently I play with girls in beer pong who don't drink and I have to drink for them. No complaints here! :)

Of course lol
not like I drink anyway ;)

accepted, you said this twice--about running?! like jogging and drinking?

i think what he means is that he probably already had a bit too many drinks and was running around, jumping and falling over after midnight

so. is the drinking (including other illegal activities) the only "fun" you guys have?
