i'm pretty sure there are plenty of "legal" things you can enjoy at CMU...
You don't need to have alcohol to enjoy a party, so long you have a good date I guess...

yeah...no one really emphasized "other" activities

well, he did mention how drinking caffene was a pastime at CMU :) I think Mountain Dew is legal..

"yippie" ........

Well I did mention movies that are only a dollar.
Shopping is another huge one as we have great shopping places. There is a little street "Walnut" in Shadyside which is amazing and my personal favorite.
There is also the incline (Amazing view. It is one of those trolleys on a line that goes ALL the way up the mountain and you see everything below you). Then you get up there and there's all these water fountains with lights and smoke. Great and expensive restaurants are up there too. I took my date up there and the bill was over 100 dollars.
There are also the MANY museums which are free to CMU students like the dinosaur thingy museum just a minute away from the CMU campus.

Basically its easier to tell me your interests rather than have me list everything. Basically you can find anything you want in PIttsburgh. There is also one of the most exciting and thrilling amusement parks near Pittsburgh you can get to via free busses.

I was basically trying to shed the image that Carnegie Mellon students follow an "all work and no play" theme.

I frequently enjoy things such as hanging out with friends at the Waterfront, shopping, watching a movie with my g/f, going on the incline, taking Karate classes, playing basketball, etc.

Note: The gym here is really awesome and there are even sub-gyms around for your convenience. For example, on the first floor of New House there is a gym so that you can go down at 3am if you can't sleep and work out.
The courts are pretty neat too and so is the pool. CMU allows sports teams that are non-official called IM (intermurral). IM teams compete against other IM teams and require no more than a simple sign-up. This allows for high-level competition of sports but without all the committment that recruited athletes put in.

so. is the drinking (including other illegal activities) the only "fun" you guys have?
[/quote]

hahahhaah
i <3 you. XD

So Beirut is popular huh? How often do you guys play?

What's Beirut?

Its beer pong, and by beer pong I mean the cups are set up in a triangle, usually ten cups, etc. No paddles.

ah we dont' have any fancy names for it.

Yea usually we play every weekend but like I said it's up to you whether to drink or not and plenty of people don't.

I'm actually heading out in a few hours to a frat party....

And our senior kid, is heading off to the lab to do experiments, so that he can get a paper published.

AcceptedtoCollege, do you think you are the "typical" CMU student?

probably not :)

Yeah, my question is kind of the same. AcceptedtoCollegeAlready are you the average student? Are there a lot of people on campus who party/ drink every weekend?

I'd say I'm a bit more outgoing since I'm in Tepper and attend "business" parties :).
On NH 5, 70% of the guys go out during the weekends and about 50% of them are in frats.

In other houses, perhaps 50/50 go out? These 50% perhaps do not drink but they definitely don't lock themselves in their rooms. Even a social gathering or a b-day party I would consider social.

Also, the avg GPA for freshman year is about 2.8 and I have a 3.8 :)
It'll all make sense once you guys attend orientation which is a whole seven days. The whole thing is basically a social gathering/party.

But like I said, you can do almost anything here. If you want my kind of lifestyle (work hard and play super hard) you can join a frat and yes its still possible to pull a good GPA while in one.

If you tend to be more like itstoomuch's son, you can find top faculty and research/intern opportunities.

If you want to be in the middle or anything else it's all possible here. (Social gatherings, not drinking, hanging out with friends, JOINING A CLUB OR ACTIVITY).

Similarily if you want to lock yourself in your room and play World of Warcraft on our highly sophisticated wireless cable internet, you can do so too (pretty small percentage).

I would however say I'm pretty average as far as the intellectual environment is.

I always enjoy a debate on George Bush or the meaning of life or other concepts relating Economics and efficiency. I study a lot to keep up my 3.8 and I visit the amazing faculty a lot to discuss with them different strategies (how to artificially boost asset recording in Accounting for example, ie Enron) :)

The bottom line is : Do we have fun? Yes
Do we work? Well.. freshman year so far ppl slack a bit but yes we work hard.
Do we learn? A LOT. Seriously I've learned more from one class with world-reknowned Steven Klepper's Principles of Economics than I have learned EVER in high school. This guy is insane as he proves that welfare is inefficient and needless in ONE CLASS, and proves that children are COMMODITIES and that TAXES are required and that MINIMUM WAGE is stupid/inefficient. Each one of these controversial topics are proved in just one class and are almost indebatable as you see how RIGHT he is. He basically crushes all your arguments with ease and he's not afraid to do it.

This guy is simply amazing and I really feel prepared for the business world. Similar faculty are all around as we have the leading minds in Drama/Engineering/Comp Sci/Psychology/etc.

u debate George Bush?

Yep. Which means contemporary U.S. international policy, history, and ethics. For a lot of fun we bring in this guy in to argue with us. He is HILARIOUS.

One of my favorite quotes from him "I'm not racist. I just don't think Iraqis deserve to live happy lives."

Its crunch time for the kid. But he's taken the time to see TBA movies, although this year it was sold out. He's not into drinking so he's got his wits when he's on the hunt.

Andrew and Andrew would be proud of Klepper.
