Hi, do any of you have any tips for improving your speed on SAT sections in general? The essay section is especially tough for me because of the 25 minute time limit. By the way, I’m a rising junior.

@Skyblade Limit yourself to a few more minutes less than the original 25 minute cap. Sounds weird right? But it will push you to work even faster and when you go back to 25 minutes, you should find yourself at the right pace

Lol I feel that in the Blue Book writing MC sections, I get more questions wrong in practice tests 4-10 (not prev. admin’d) than in practice tests 1-3 (prev. admin’d), dunno why that happens…

@medicsz: Thank you!
I’ve heard more than once that if you want a 10+ on the essay it’s good to have 3 examples, but is that true? Does it really matter how many examples you put?

@Skyblade Not necessarily 3 examples. It’s necessary to fill 2 pages.
Btw, for the essay section, I don’t think it’s possible to limit your time if you want to fill up 2 pages with insightful examples.
Correct me if I’m wrong

is it possible to have a 10 essay if you have only 1.5 pages?

hey friends! I have a question on the SAT BB test #4: do you think that this is harder than the typical SAT test? I was disappointed to find that there was no real score, just a range; would my predicted score be on the high end or low end?

@lanflan That’s because the only administered tests in BB are the first 3. Everything else is just a range because those have not been officially administered,

How do you guys Maintain your score?

Meaning, if you’ve already reached your “goal” score for October (on practice tests) - How do you maintain that until the October Test?

@Zeppelin7 Of course, but you better make it sweet and focused on point, because the essay readers have very few minutes (1-2) to read yours out of everybody else’s… make it stand out and spread your knowledge of word terminology throughout the essay (not to the extent where you are doing it just to impress them…)

They know when you are doing that^

But it is really hard to get a 10 with 1,5 pages. And i’ve heard that sometimes they even give each essay 30 seconds to read, meaning they would not even read the body pars at all (well, may be the first few sentences).
But I think this, paradoxically, is our huge advantage

@7alman How have you defined “reaching your goal score”? I wouldn’t really say anyone’s reached their goal until they can earn that score on practice exams several times in a row. If you’re at that point, I would recommend setting your goal higher since you still have a few months left to work! Otherwise, I would recommend just doing a practice test once a week to “stay in shape” so to speak.

@Phongtheha: Thanks! Actually, I’ve read that you should limit your time on the essay too, but, hmm…

Maybe it just takes practice.

@lanflan Thanks for the input.

@Phongtheha shoot, if that’s true then I have need to work on my essays, I write quality essays, but I guess I don’t write quantity well

@medicsz Thanks for the tip!

Has anybody reached a standstill yet? New procedure here for math. Almost there.

^Please explain

Update for practice test #3 in the blue book:

Composite was a 2030, so I’m happy of breaking the 2000s. Math was a 720 (700 from both #1&2), CR was a 720 (#1: 670, 2: 640) and Writing went down again to a 590 (#1: 560, 2: 650).

Analysis: My Math score is pretty constant between tests (slightly improving so that’s good), but CR and W seem to be fluctuating a bit more, so I think it depends more on the test (Though I definitely am improving on CR). Writing (ughh) is huge problem for me, not the essays (unless you’re talking about quantity) but the grammar MC (especially the ones where you have to identify the problem); I’m going to need to do more practice on that before I take my next practice test in the BB.

Goal for #4: Break the 2100s by increasing my W score to (hopefully) atleast a 650 + a slight increase in Math and CR (work on vocab)

How are the rest of you guys progressing?
(Not gonna lie, I’m making these more for myself as a way to organize my thoughts and create a plan, more than to show future, or present, CCers how I am processing my results; nevertheless, I hoped these updates help, even to an extent)

@Zeppelin7 How many sections out of practice tests are you taking per day?

@medicsz I did this one in particular over a two day stretch, I try not to spread it out too much because I won’t be used to the stamina (i guess that’s the right word) of the test. I usually try to finish it one day
