So today I found out, as was said by a few people, that the foreign language requirement is nothing that I need to worry about, since I'm Indian born/ Australian citizen. BUT I still have to do TOEFL?!angry

SO that means I have to pay $50 to confirm that I can speak perfect English, even though I can!
Any ideas about how I can avoid this? I asked them if I could waiver this by showing my English grades or SATs...but no go....:(

Michigan is strangely rigid about the TOEFL. I had a 740 on the SAT CR and a 5 on my AP English (took it in 11th grade, so I had the results sent to Michigan along with my application) and they still insisted on my presenting them with the TOEFL.

I don;t want to spend $50 for confirming what I already know.

Well, they're trying to figure out if you know or don't know - just like with the SAT or any other test you have to take. That said, I do agree that the UM is very weird about a lot of these issues. I'm sure if you talk to someone one on one you might get a more flexible response.

But, rather than spending the money for the TOEFL, can't I just show my English grades? SAT English Scores? Can I have a talk over the phone so they can hear my beautiful Australian accent?:P

Well I sent in a question, response within two days!

I moved here 5 years ago from Europe (not having lived in an English-speaking country before), and I pretty much just chose to ignore their TOEFL requirement.
I got in, and they never bothered asking me for my scores.
So my advice is to simply ignore it.

You are exempted if English is your first language, or if you have attended high school in a country where English is the official language (e.g., Australia). Those are the norms.

I think Michigan also makes exceptions for students attending US/Canadian/British international schools ... 'cause none of those students here submit any TOEFL scores.

I had a 780 on my SAT critical reading portion, and a 790 on the writing.
Also a 5 on the AP Language exam.
(Are you asking about English scores or my stats in general?)

Okay, well, I got a 2340 on my SAT. (770 math)
35 ACT
5 APs last year, all 5s on the exams
(Chem, Calc BC, Eng. Language, both Physics C)
4.0 GPA unweighted/ 4.0 Umich GPA
Um... what else is there?
3 APs plus a college math class this year. The other classes (notAPs) are Anatomy and Pathology and Microbiology&Genetics 2nd sem.
Um.................
I work about 20 hrs. a week in a restaurant, and I'm pretty involved in robotics.
And as for my extracurriculars:
Robotics team: Communications Captain: 9th-12th
French Club: Marketing Captain: 9th-12th
Volunteering at the Older Person's Commission since 10th grade
Church Youth Group: 9th-12th

If you attended high school in the States, you are exempted from taking the TOEFL.

And go Blue, that's even worse!
[/quote]
Yup, it's a total rip-off. Did you attend an international school? Where did you pick up your beautiful Australian accent?

GoBlue, I think that if you attended HS in the US, you aren't necessarily exempted, but you can send them a letter asking them to waive the requirement.
I'm pretty sure that's what I read on the umich website.

@ Go Blue, I live in Australia, so I naturally picked up the accent from here. I attend a regular public school, a very good one at that though.
