The Thomas Haider Program might be getting the shaft

With the upcoming opening of UCR's own med school (in 2012?) the necessity of the UCR-UCLA joint program has come into discussion. I do not know much about what will happen as I am the physics major, but the honors bio students around me have been talking about an upcoming meeting in which UCR's best program might be demolished. I do not know much about the situation myself, I will be finding out information after the meeting, but*** if you have decided on UCR with that program as a major reason, you might want to think about this. *** Whether or not it will be removed or not at all will be discussed, as well as, if so, in how little time. If this is of concern to you, feel free to comment and I will let you know what the undergrad pre-med students were told.

I'd like to know, please. I certainly hope this is not true. :(

The program is the only reason I am even considering UCR. When I went to their orientation in Santa Clara, they seemed slightly wishy washy with the stability of their med school... considering its a soon to be med school. You can't just pull a med school out of your rear end and hope for the best.

I would also like to know, thanks.

Juniorita, did they say anything about the future of the prog? I could care less about the med school since it will be up in '12(at the earliest), and I'm gonna be graduating in '11. Haider is one of the MAJOR reasons I am considering the school, and I really want to go. Let's hope for the best, and I think I'll be making a few phone calls to the school tomorrow.

From what I have heard, the Thomas Haider Program is guaranteed for the class of 2010. As for '11, it is possible but not guaranteed.

Of course if you were to enter Fall 2007 and graduate in 3 years it would be promised (assuming u have the GPA and the research).

Also note, if you are now restricted to UCR if the program drops you could always transfer

Personally, I do not think they will drop the program until the UCR med school opens in 2012 or later, but who knows.

I dont know, it doesn't make sense. Isn't it required to go 2 years at the ucr med school and then 2 years at ucla med school?

I just talked to the coordinator of Student Affairs for the Haider Program:

She said that IF the med school opens as planned in 2012, kids who would graduate in 2011 would NOT be able to enter the Thomas Haider program (It would be scrapped).

She cautioned that it was still a proposal, so eventually we will know what the program's prospects will be. Unfortunately, that doesn't look likely until AFTER we enter college :(
