The town of Santa Cruz

Hi everyone. Does anyone know if the town of santa cruz is like umm....bike friendly? can i use the shuttles and my bike to get around? How hard is it to get to the beach from campus? thank you :P

Actually, everything is pretty accessible.

Bike friendly? Well, there are a lot of bikers on and off campus but the hills of UCSC are pretty steep so you will need not only a gear bike but also be a fairly experienced rider. If you get tired, you can put your bike in the front of the UCSC shuttles or Santa Cruz public busses.

You can definitely get around anywhere by bus (which is free). You can get to the beach, downtown Santa Cruz, convenience stores, etc.

The beach is fairly close to the campus but you will have a bit of a bike ride there and back. I'd guess 4 miles one way but that might be off. The bus probably is the best option and you can take your bike, and then bike around once you get to the beach.

Overall it is a small town, the public transportation is pretty good and a lot of students have bikes to get around.

thank you trumpet! you're always there to help out :D

Also many buses have bike racks on the back so if you bike, say to the base of Bay Street, You can bus to campus while you bike piggybacks. You will definitely get a workout.

Also there is a strong green influence in Santa Cruz so right now the whole bike over car contingent is really strong.

To clarify, busses are not FREE. the pass is included in your fees.
