The Truth About UCSD-Revelle

Ive been seering a lot of negative comments being written about revelle, about how its so courseload is so demanding and how it will ruin ur life. Im just wondering if there is anyone out there who has attended revelle to give me some first hand experiences. Is revelle really that bad, cuz i randomly selected revelle as my first choice and now im kinda not wanting to go there. SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME THE TRUTHHHHH

so you want the truth eh...well...YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH...no just kidding...eh revelle isn't THAT bad...i guess...i'm a first year, about to start spring quarter 05...so i'll give you my perspective of the MASSIVE load of general ed requirements and livingon campus at revelle this year:

1) GENERAL ED REQUIREMENTS
well..this one really scares people away...revelle DOES have the most GE requirements, but not necessarily the HARDEST...it's possible to pass, just not with very good grades...
--humanities--i just took humanities 1 and it was CRAP...well if you like literature and deep literature analysis with "intensive (AND EXTENSIVE) writing", you might enjoy it, but as for me...nope, hated it...
--social sciences--you are required to take 2 social science courses (poli sci, history, etc) and one american cultures course (ethnic studies, sociology, etc)...which aren't TOO bad...if you get the right teacher...and AP credit shines at its brightest in this section because you get to pass out of the social sciences if u passed a AP history test
--math--
three quarters of math...not bad, maybe because I like math, but there are two different kinds of calculus you can take..the 10 series (non-science based) and 20 series (science/engineering based)...so it's not that bad...watch out for those bad asian teachers though =X
--physical and biological sciences--
four quarters of chem and physics and one bio course...it depends on your major whether you're gonna take more physics or more chem courses...like for example, i'm a computer engineering major, therefore i'm gonna take 3 physics courses and one chem and bio course...again, not bad if you can get a good teacher
--foreign language--
i think this one sucks...i sucked at spanish...i haven't experienced any language courses at UCSD yet, but i heard they suck because you have that class EVERY DAY...and that makes me sad =(...
--areas of focus & fine arts--
areas of focus is based on subjects that are not related to your major...i don't know what to suggest for this part yet, but for fine arts...i HIGHLY suggest everyone to take GOSPEL CHOIR with ken anderson...EASY 3 CREDITS + FINE ARTS SATISFACTION..basically you go to class, go to concerts, and you pass...just like that...

OVERALL ANALYSIS:
just hope you're not an engineering major like me, because you'll probably finish in 5 years =...overall, it is not that bad if you fit in a few summers and some extra units each quarter...

2)HOUSING
hmmm...dungeon houses you say? yeah...the fleet housing, the OLDEST residence halls of ALL UCSD because revelle was the first college...yeah THEY SUCK...well some people may prefer the fleets, but i think they suck because you don't really get to know any new people from revelle when you live in the fleets since most people living in the fleets are overflowed housing people from ERC/thurgood marshall...and you think i'm just saying this because i think they suck, I LIVE IN ONE OF THE FLEETS, so i should know...but yeah they're not very great...ONLY plus is that you get 100mbps connection in the fleets and soon you will discover, i2hub.com is your friend =D
but on the other hand...
ARGO/BLAKE...the NEWEST residence halls at revelle are pretty nice...they are worthless compared to ERC dorms, but at least they're bigger...ERC dorms look VERY NICE from outside, but they're CRAMPING KIDS IN THERE...so it's not very roomy...argo and blake can be a little loud sometimes because it's like a huge apt complex type thing with a bunch of suites...but it's a lot better compared to the fleets

3)FOOD
once you go to orientation and try the food at Plaza Cafe, you're gonna think "OMG THIS IS GOOD STUFF"...a few months later you're gonna be begging people to take your meal points away because plaza food sucks THAT BAD...as opposed to other dining halls such as Sierra Summit (Muir) and Ocean View Terrace (Marshall), revelle is probably pretty low class, but we PWN sixth college and warren college's food...PWN! meal points are assigned to everyone living on campus and food is overcharged at dining halls so don't bring cash to the dining halls, just use the card...but yeah the only good thing about plaza cafe is probably...the stir fry and the roast beef...everything else is ehhh...

4)PEOPLE
i'm gonna tell you now that you're gonna meet some of the SMARTEST PEOPLE EVER at revelle...as opposed to muir where you will meet some of the cough cough hahaha...no offense muir kids...the people at revelle are cool, depends who you meet with at orientation...ORIENTATION MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE! that's where i met most of my friends...so GO AND HAVE FUN AT ORIENTATION!...oh yeah and revelle is really spirited too, so if you're into that whole spirit thing, then revelle is the place to be...now for the big question..."HOW ARE THE GIRLS AT REVELLE?"...not very appealing...i can tell you that...if you like your women wearing paper bags, then come to revelle...and THAT my friend is the truth, i'm not being mean...there are a FEW cute girls but they don't go to revelle...maybe under 10 girls that are cute with potential go to revelle....and that is nothing but the truth

WOW that was a long post...if you thought this was useless because it didn't answer any of your questions, ask on and i will try to answer based on my knowledge of revelle...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

dammmiittt i knew i should have put muir or marshall for my first choice. crap this sucks cuz i really wanted to go to sd since i was a kid

revelle also gets the most respect...my brother's in warren (and is a total slacker) and one of my friends is in revelle...everyone I know applied to revelle, because it's the best.

hahaha, bboyvortex. for the very funny and equally informative post, i salute. you.

if i decide to go to UCSD, i guess i can enter marshall in peace.

.... or maybe not. since you said that the overflow of students from marshall get stuck in the FLEETS. hook us marshall acceptees up with some information, too, yeah? if you can.

well marshall kids...i don't know too much about thurgood marshall, but i have a few friends that go to marshall...i'll try to base my knowledge on their experience...basically at marshall as a freshman, you will be living in the lower apartments (in which i might add are VERY nice...condo-like housing) or the marshall res halls which are in my opinion pretty good...probably equal to the housing of revelle's ARGO/BLAKE halls...so with the possibility of being able to live in the lower apts and the thurgood marshall res halls, the chances of getting into a fleet might be very low, although it still happens...most overflow people that get stuck in the FLEETS are kids from ERC...sooo sucks for them =(...
--academic-wise...i think marshall is average...i think that it's the third hardest college (1st revelle, 2nd ERC) in all of UCSD so it's not that bad...there's this DOC(Diversity of Culture...i think?...a writing class basically) requirement you must satisfy for general ed requirements...but everything else isn't as bad as revelle's requirements...i don't think TM kids have to worry about a language requirement...i'm not sure, you might want to check the TM website for more info...
--FOOD
thurgood marshall has a dining hall called OVT (Ocean View Terrace...even though you can't really see the ocean because it's covered with trees and houses)...and OVT is frickin rad...it's owned by a private owner so it closes at 1AM as opposed to all the other dining halls on campus that close at 8PM...my suggestions at OVT are the breakfast burritos and the regular burritos...
--PEOPLE
depends on the people you meet...from my experience, thurgood marshall people are pretty chill...and for the GIRLS...not bad...at least better than revelle..i'm sorry revelle girls if you are reading this, but the truth hurts...=(

revelle dorms kinda suck compared to the others...

is there anything good about revelle???? Shat load of ge's, shatty dorms, mediocre food, ugly chicks

THROW ME A BONE SOMEONE PLEASEEE

How's Muir? Can anyone give a description of it like the one above (which is awesome, thanks!)?

i was wondering how far it is from college to college. im going to marshall and my friend is going to muir and i was wondering is it like walking distance or do u have to drive a car to like different colleges?

no you don't need to drive a car from college to college...the colleges are closer than one would expect...i think the farthest colleges away from each other are ERC to sixth and i think revelle to warren...but there are shuttle services that loops around the campus clockwise and counter-clockwise that'll take you around campus...so there's no real need for a car to get from one place to another....and plus the parking's a pain at UCSD also...$477 for a yearly parking permit and there are no guaranteed parking spots...so yeah, getting a bike/longboard/skateboard is probably a good idea...

the only good thing about revelle i think is that we are praised the most among the other colleges for all the hard work that we do...basically we get the reputation of being the smartest people at UCSD, although it isn't always the case at revelle...i really don't know what to say other than the fact that we have the best reputation in terms of academics...

JOHN MUIR COLLEGE

wow it looks like i'm doing one of these for every college...hahah...no problem though

--academics--
so it's not a secret that muir has the LEAST amount of GEs...it'll probably be the easiest ride in college if you are planning to become an engineer or premed since you don't have to deal with all those darn GEs...muir i think consists of two writing courses and minimal science and math...and i had a friend who took OCEANOGRAPHY for math! so if you're not very fond of math, and math is not very fond of you either, you can dodge it by taking oceanography or some other class that might satisfy the math requirement...the writing requirements aren't too bad either, but i heard you have to write like an 18 page report or something??? i don't know but it won't be THAT bad since you only have to take i think 2 quarters of it and then forget about it...
--HOUSING--
well some people would refer to muir res halls as "prisons" because they kind of look like prisons from the outside...but on the inside it isn't as bad...the dorms are also suite based and there is even one res hall that has 11 floors...and on the 10th floor, you can get a clear view of the ocean and the sun and it's just a very NICE VIEW! so if you sign up for housing or at orientation when you apply for housing, try to get the 10th floor at TIOGA hall to get that beautiful view! although the dorms are kind of old, they're still in good shape i believe, not that bad compared to the fleets at revelle

--FOOD--
muir has a dining hall called Sierra Summit and in my opinion, the food isn't too bad there because there is a wide variety of things to choose from...my advice to you is to beware of the stir fry at muir...you JUST MIGHT die of a heart attack after eating one of those because it's so salty...oh and sierra summit also has it's own dessert stand thing inside the dining hall for smoothies and ice cream...also muir has this one other dining place called el mercado?? it's a mexican restaurant that i've never been to so i can't say anything about it...sorry

--PEOPLE--
now there are two types of people at muir...the slackers and the ones who want the least amount of GEs possible...there will be occasions where you think some of your classmates from muir are constantly high because all they do is smoke, sleep, and not study...then you have your people who actually care more about UCSD than for the beach and want to do well in life...so yeah, now for the GIRLS at muir...in my opinion...not that great looking...some are alright, but i give it a C as opposed to marshall's B and revelle's F-/G+ =( poor revelle =( hahahaha

if anyone has any personal questions about anything UCSD related, you guys can email me at apham@ucsd.edu because i'm a first year that goes to revelle and i know most of this stuff already...so if you have any questions, email my way and i'll try my best to help you

wow, bboyvortex u must not hav a life to be posting such detailed descriptions of all the colleges at ucsd. anyhow, keep up the good work.

hahaha you come to revelle buddy and see for yourself =\ i don't think you'll like what you'll see

EDIT: there are ugly girls at UCSD period...their nest is located at revelle though

bboyv: can u giv me some insight on sixth: dorms, GEs, food, girls and so on. thanks, u seem to know ur stuff on ucsd

i am very sorry but i don't know too much about sixth college =...but from what i heard the college looks pretty bad in terms of housing...the term "camp snoopy" is used quite often when referring to sixth college...but i have NEVER been to sixth college...after being in UCSD for 2 quarters, i've never visited sixth college's dining hall and barely even seen the college...so yes, my apologies...but you may be able to find other people from sixth college with helpful info on other threads...sorry guys

how about warren???

Here's a link for you guys, for those who aren't thread-hoppers. :p
